Hi

Just wondered if someone could confirm the following

I was told today (15-Jul-2013) that due to the current strange weather the UK is having that there was a steam ban on the Settle-Carlisle line

I was hoping to go to Hellifield on Wednesday to see Galatea do the weekly Fellsman

Is there? As far as I'm aware it's still on for steam traction throughout still. Was LMS 8F 48151 last week, and looking on YouTube it did run too, bearing in mind last week it was still baking hot like it currently is. So with no diesel penciled in and the fact it ran last week without one suggests it should be ok Wednesday

The only steam ban I know of was on the Western region, and that has been lifted again.

Kettles are a nuisance in this weather though.

kettles were banned between York and Scarborough, hence a Spoon stood in for Galatea on saturday from Holgate - Scarborough and back. I'm on the spa tomorrow which is supposedely steam piloting diesel York - Scarborough suggesting a cautious lift of the ban.

Hadn't heard about that one, though with the exceptionally hot weather recently I'm far from surprised bans have been introduced.

I did find myself in the cess between Glyndyfrdwy and Carrog dousing down a line side fire yesterday, perhaps I should add that as a delay reason to the sim

I saw 48151 and 45231 come through my town today on a movement from Carnforth to York which will be the locos for the Scabby spa. Only problem was it had 47 760 at the front

Went to the great gathering today and the 8F was outside but not in steam so can only assume if there was steam then it was the black 5 that was used.

Great day out and returned the acquaintance with Dominion of Canada. The last time I saw that it was dumped outside Darlington shed waiting a decision as to what was going to happen to it. At one time it did look like it would go no further than the cutters torch at North Road Works......glad it did'nt.......not sure about that bell though. Last day tomorrow so if you still have a chance to go then would recommend it.

How busy was it? I decided against going on Saturday because reports had been that it was manic on weekdays, let alone weekends.

They're doing it again at the end of October.

It was crowded but walked straight in so no long queues at 11 o'clock. Could not believe that the majority actually stood back and waited whilst you took pictures........I put it down to the weather......all this heat does strange things to people.

I went to see the great gathering on Monday took us 20 mins to get in and soon as we got in the Que 3 park and ride bendy buses pulled in to the bus stop and everyone got off and onto the Que. They were Queuing to the railway tunnel. But i have got to say what a fantastic site of the A4's. Just missed the movement from Carnforth - York though.

everyone always forgets the other entrance on Leeman road, so inevitably when i turned up to sign in at 10:00am, there was a massive winding queue outside station hall, and a tiny queue at the Leeman road entrance to the main hall!

Agree with the Leeman Road entrance. We found that the Network Rail car park by the training centre was full, however, there was a pre booking area which had about 15 spaces of which only 1 was taken. A quick chat with the very nice car park attendant who said they had only bookings for 4 of them and we were only too welcome to park there and we were in one.
Yes, we did have to wait in line to get on the footplate of Dwight but only for 20 minutes so it was worth it to get the very informative potted history of them all.

I suppose it's a case of you pay your money and you take your chance, but in this case it is free but well worth a donation which you can make. A bit like Sim Sig really..........

We seem to have gone off the original topic. I wasnt asking about the NRM gathering - I wanted to know about the steam tours and the heatwave.

Another regular steam tour is hit by Network Rails steam ban or in other words - Fire Risk

The Waverley from York-Leeds-Hellifield-carlisle this coming Sunday (21st July) has been cancelled

Is it only the heat wave that is causing this problem.....surely a prolonged period of draught could also have the same effect. I think this thread could go on for quite sometime that being the case.
