What value is "Train running late" in Incident Report? 16/07/2013 at 14:42 #47225

Sorry for asking another dumb question.

I would like to know why "01:34:00 6O40 running 20 minutes late" as displayed in the Incident Report is supposed to help me in playing SimSig.

- It just adds an extra line of unneeded data to the ever growing Incident List, which I can't delete.
- It doesn't refer to an incident.
- It's out of date from the moment it appears. I can roughly work out how late a train currently is by comparing its ETA at the next waypoint with the SimSig clock.
- There is no way of ordering this data; maybe it belongs in the Train List instead, since it's software-generated.
- I bet that real signallers who don't eat quiche don't have access to such niceties.
- I have no idea what triggers an entry and how often it is recalculated.
- By the time it appears, there's usually nothing I can do about it, anyway.
- To my recollection I never get informed when a train is early instead of late.

So, why is it there and how relevant is it to real life operations?

It informs you that a train approaching the area is delayed, helping you to plan ahead (which, going by your previous posts, you like to do).

Yes it is. It is referring to out-of-course running.

However, the train has not appeared yet.

It can't go in the train list, the train hasn't entered yet.

True, they don't get it given it in this format, but they do have access to systems like TRUST which give real-time running information, which isn't simulated in SimSig.

Delays are randomly generated when the simulation starts.

You can plan ahead though, and use it to inform other regulating decisions.

Good point, this may be one for the wish list.

I believe trains delayed in-sim at station stops also get reported in the incident log; so all delays are reported as part of the incident log.

You can do if the developer sets the parameters by entry point, including whether to enter at an alternative EP (if sensible) i.e. Fast vice slow. SwinDid has this feature.

Thanks everyone, particularly Steamer, for your explanations.

So its value is informing of trains that haven't arrived yet. That should have been obvious to me. I was probably confused by entries relating to trains already in my area - delayed at stations, etc.

A parallel paper note timetable seems like a good idea right now.

Back in the day it would all depend on who was on duty in the Control, who your mates were down the line (some would think to ring you, others wouldn't) and how well the job was going - if it were seriously up the pictures (the time you most need that sort of information) they'd be too busy sorting their bit of the railway out to tell you
