How many coaches will each of the platforms at Marylebone accommodate?

I think (not 100% sure as I don't have the documentation to hand) that it is:

Plat 1 - 11
Plat 2/3 - 12
Plat 4 - 8
Plat 5/6 - 12

But I stand to be corrected

I did my homework on this last weekend! According to Network Rail's Timetable Planning Rules 2013, the platform lengths are as follows:

P1 227m (9 cars)
P2 242m (10 cars)
P3 242m (10 cars)
P4 128m (5 cars)
P5 216m (9 cars)
P6 216m (9 cars)


The numbers of cars are my estimates, calculated assuming DMU car lengths of 23m. It's possible that P1 might fit 10 cars, but I don't have local knowledge and have not tested this in the sim, so someone would have to confirm. If I've understood the manual correctly, platforms 1-3 and 5-6 have permissive working, but you cannot call-on into platform 4.

It might be useful if someone who knows how to do it could paste the platform lengths in the manual.

Done - using the figures you've provided. Not sure if they're correct, nor if it is in the right place on the manual, but shouldn't be too hard for someone else to move elsewhere if so desired.

The sectional appendix dated February 2013 that is available online from Network Rail, shows the platform lengths as follows.:

P1 229m
P2 245m
P3 245m
P4 115m
P5 184m
P6 216m

Platforms 1-4 are correct, although Platforms 5 & 6 are operationally restricted to 8 vehicle lengths.

Platform 1 can not physically fit 10 vehicles.

The Up Platform Siding (aka Wall Siding) can accomodate 11 vehicle lengths, and the Up Siding (aka Tunnel Siding) can accomodate 7 vehicle lengths.

Thanks for doing that, UKTM.

The data source I used is from the Operational Rules download at the bottom of this page (Timetable Planning Rules > London North Western > 5.4 Platform Lengths).

Given there's a discrepancy between a couple of the data sources, it might be helpful if one of the developers could check what was actually built into the sim.

Thread drift warning!!! Obviously vehicles are longer than they used to be. Or we were better at squeezing them in. All 4 platforms and the Wall Side used to take 12 cars in the old layout.

Incidentally, there used to be a Sectional Appendix entry saying the lines for 55 yards from the buffer stops were not track circuited, and drivers receiving a green (this was the 1980 SA!) to enter the platform must be prepared to find vehicles standing on this portion of line. I never knew that to happen so I don't know quite what impact it would've had on platform capacity, but I suspect - provided it was only a short vehicle and the driver buffered right up - you'd still have just about got 12 in. (I suspect the country end cab would've been a foot or 2 outside the starter but not quite on the track, and as the starters were semaphores we'd have got away with that too.)

The Wall Side, of course, never used to be tracked at all.

The Ops Rules document and RoTP platform lengths are correct, but there are a few operating restrictions over the route (such as those listed for Platforms 5 & 6 at Marylebone) where the number of vehicles we can use are reduced.

Vehicle lengths for 165/8 are traction are nominally 23m on the sim, although this has a very slight variation in real life. e.g. 168/0 DMOS(L) vehicles are 24.1m long and 168/0 MS(L) vehicles are 23.6m long.
