Very sad, I agree, but as there seems to be evidence that the LC barriers were down and the bus driver chose to drive through them into the train, this does not IMO really make it all that relevant to a signalling forum.

In Australia we have regular occurrences of this kind, usually involving single cars or trucks, where drivers ignore blinking lights, etc.

Now, if there was some possibility of signalling malfunction, I would follow this with more interest.

Yeah, the reports I've seen also make it sound like a normal vehicle-gets-in-train's-way incident. It's really only notable because (a) the vehicle was a bus and innocent passengers died, and (b) there was a major rail wreck elsewhere in Quebec on July 6 (also not signal-related; it sounded like hand brakes might not have been set properly and a hazmat train ran away overnight) and so the "are trains actually safe" people are still out in force.

The barrier(s) may have indeed been down, as the various reports, eyewitness accounts, etc., say, but that does not stop a person driving a motor vehicle (car/bus/lorry/whatever) from, say, perhaps collapsing at the wheel or briefly losing conciousness and ending up driving through the already-lowered barrier(s)!

which is why there is the The real thing (anything else rail-oriented) section, which this thread has been posted in.

This (and a couple of similar incidents) shows that motorists are entirely capable of driving through a substantial gate without it being a deliberate action. Best to ignore the RMT's usual nonsense - looking after its members' interests by, in effect, demanding the abolition of their jobs!
