Hi, The answer to this question is probably staring me in the face but, Why do som sims seem to in auto mode?

I believe you are referring to a feature called ARS. ARS stands for Automatic Routing System. It is a feature in signal boxes that assists signalers route trains by automatically setting routes ahead of a train (based on that's trains timetable) in order to keep that train running under green signals where possible. The system is not perfect however, particularly when dealing with late or delayed trains so there is always a signaler there to keep an eye on it. There's more info on it in the wiki.
