A check just now with Companies House shows that there is no active company registered with them by the name of SimSig?!
It would only be on companies house if its a LTD company, not if its a sole trader, partnership or Firm (which are also legitimate companies, but without Limited Liability)

I believe SimSig was a Ltd co but is now a trading name of Cajon Rail LLC incorporated in California.

Peter,

Re your Scottish payware sims - I notice in the downloads section that they were submitted on 3rd August 2013. I have the same version numbers on my computer from December 2012. Can you advise please if there are any differences between the versions on my computer and those currently in the Downloads.

I think that was the date stamp for when I reorganised the download area - there were no revisons to the Sims at that time. If the version numbers match then they are the same.

It's insulting to liken SimSig to a freemium game (post #24), IMO a calculated ripoff. SimSig is a remarkably transparent environment compared with others I have encountered.

I see nothing amiss with the present arrangement, which allows sim writers like Karl freedom to release his own at no charge. If it were not for this, then the very small charge for payware sims should be extended to most of them, not just a few. This not only helps us appreciate the work the developers have put into them, it confers on them a reciprocal responsibility to maintain the software. Both sides of the same coin. Karl is under no such obligation but does it because he wants to.

I recall reading somewhere that one reason Communist economies stagnated was that few knew the real value of anything until their economists began pricing their products in line with those of Western countries. It's important to be able to put a price on value.

If on the other hand members had full access to core software, enabling them to create their own sims without relying on the inner circle, there would be no justification for charging at all. No incentive to improve, either. SimSig would quietly fail under the weight of inferior sims and associated bloat.

Here's an alternative proposition. Just-Great-Software, which markets EditPad and several other apps, has a free lite version but restricts membership of its forum to those who have bought its payware versions. The manuals are free, but unless you belong to their forum you will not be able to get your questions answered.

Firstly, I'd like to thank the assembled developers for their latest productions - excellent work all round! The quality of West Hampstead sim really puts the relatively small cost into perspective.

Returning to the topic, then - Chris makes a valid point, which sadly seems to have been overshadowed by the predictable rants that I think we're all bored of now. I'm more than happy to pay the full cost of a sim that interests me, as I've just done for WH. However, there's two downsides of this approach for me - one is that, as a household of railwaymen* (well, two - plus the little 'un who's a few years away from it all yet!), we occasionally enjoy a quiet night in with some multiplayer Simsig. We don't do this very often, so it wouldn't justify shelling out on two licenses for each sim, but it limits the options if we've only got freeware or chained payware sims to choose from. Would it be possible to purchase a second (or more) license for a given sim, linked to the same account (otherwise I'm sure it'd be wide open to abuse), at a discounted rate?

We come across the other downside when a few of us get together for a Simsig session in a local pub (not a 'private' meet as such, just not really organised with much notice!). Again, if the chosen sim happened to be payware, it's unlikely that every participant would have purchased a license (some are infrequent Simsiggers!). Chris' suggestion of a 'rental' might help here too - perhaps some sort of special arrangement, for a fee of course, to issue a larger number of licenses valid for only a short period.

Any thoughts?

Tom
