Interpose button 11/11/2013 at 05:49 #51324

The interpose button is a bit weird.

When I click the button (or press I), the button appears to press down and the TD dialog box pops up. If I enter a TD and click OK, the interpose button stays pressed, and when I click on a signal, the TD interposes and the button pops back up—perfectly reasonable, and exactly what I would expect.

If I cancel the dialog box, my next mouse click on a signal starts a route setting as expected; however, the interpose button stays pressed down until I set a route, at which point it pops back up—a little weird, but nothing too serious, as it’s only a graphical issue.

On the other hand, if I enter a TD and click OK in the dialog box, then click the interpose button again, the button pops back up, no second dialog box is shown, but the next click on a signal still interposes the TD. This looks like it should be an easy way to cancel a mistake (start interposing but realize you shouldn’t have? Just click the interpose button again to leave interpose mode!), but actually, the next click on a signal still interposes despite that.

Anyone else get this, or is it something peculiar to running Simsig under WINE? As it is, I haven’t found any way to leave interpose mode without actually interposing the TD, so if I make a mistake, I have to find an out-of-the-way berth, interpose there, and then cancel the TD. It would be much easier if I could just click the interpose button again, thus popping the button back up and leaving interpose mode!

You can interpose by right clicking a signal or TD. But make sure that "Right-click cancels route" is unticked in F3 Control.

Mm, I know that’s an option. Unfortunately I need to cancel routes enough that I tend to keep that option turned on, but this may be how I do interposing in the loader sims where shift-right-click still pops up the menu even with that option turned on. Still, the behaviour of the button is odd—a small bug, but still a bug IMO.

No, I seem to recall that there's no way to "cancel" interposing, having tried to work out how to do it. As you point out, the behaviour isn't quite what you expect!

If I get your statement correctly, do you want to cancel interposing after you have already typed in the TD but before clicking the location you want to interpose at?

If so, simply click the TD Interpose button on the bar again and that will cancel it.

This is something I've been aware of for probably quite a while ago now but it is something I see as being so small that I've not really given it much thought. Should I have ever ended up interposing a headcode then realised I didn't need it I've merely cancelled it and moved on.

I can understand and can follow and recreate what you're saying; however whilst doing so I've found that, as I expect (and even remember from SimSig's own signalling school), if you do not click on a signal within 15 seconds after having provided the headcode (Train ID) to be interposed then it will not be interposed and the signal cursor will begin to flash as if you're about to set a route.

Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for.

You’re correct in what I was talking about. However, your suggestion is exactly what doesn’t work: clicking the TD interpose button again doesn’t actually cancel the interpose operation. It makes the button pop up again as if the operation were cancelled, but click on a signal after doing that and the TD will still interpose, even though the button popped back up!

It is indeed a small issue, very low priority. But I think still worth mentioning for completeness. The 15 second thing is nice to know, if not always useful (I’ve been playing North Wales Coast Project X, so 15 seconds in which I don’t have to do anything is pretty rare!)
