20.11.13: 221105 working the 10.10 Euston to Chester service slid into the buffers at Chester Platform 1. image Seems to be due to poor adhesion, although quite how that is possible on a bay platform with no foliage nearby begs the question, Maybe the driver overcooked it? I would imagine that this would be quite possible but still a little tricky to overshoot when in my experience all bay platforms have a 5/10M.P.H speed on the approach

The wheels picked up again *just* in time to stop before the buffers, but any speed limit on the approach would have no effect. And there was that overrun in Kent a year or two back which went for a few miles. Log in to reply |

I've just come back from Liverpool and went to have a look again on my way through Chester. Platform 3A has been cordoned off (For those who aren't familiar Platform 1 where the incident took place is the Euston facing bay platform accessed by passengers via 3A), lots of blinking stop boards evident. The front coach of the voyager is angled upwards. 57308 was sat on the through road, then moved off towards Crewe, I'll take a stab they'll use it to drag the Voyager clear, unfortunately I had to catch my train so couldn't stay to watch. Thoughts to the driver, and the rest of the crew. Being involved in any incident no matter how minor on a railway is never a nice feeling, even when it's through no fault of your own. If its like my route then not only will the driver be d&a so will the signaller. Having been through that process when you've nothing wrong, just so all the tick boxes are ticked is not nice. Thoughts with the passengers and railway staff involved. That's why I will never speculate in a public forum.

I see from the RAIB alert today that they are looking at the rail adhesion problems that were encountered as the train entered Chester station. Will be interesting to see what the final report shows but they are also looking at the buffer arrangement in the bay. Geoff Log in to reply |
