Evening all,

Just to say that an engineering posession has now been confirmed for the weekend of the 12th / 13th April 2014 that will see off the signalboxes at Berwick, Polegate, Hampden Park, Eastbourne, Pevensey and Bexhill with control going into the hands of Three Bridges ROC.

A look on OTT (opentraintimes) for Friday 11th April reveals that the rail replacement buses will start running from Eastbourne at around 21:15hrs on the Friday evening. The final trains through Bexhill, Berwick and Eastbourne under the current signalling will be:

Eastbourne:
1F67 20:50 Ore - London Victoria (arr. 21:25, dep. 21:31)
1F54 21:07 Haywards Heath - Eastbourne (due arr. 21:48)
5F67 21:20 Ore - Eastbourne (due arr. 21:43)
No more arrivals / departures thereafter until Monday morning.

Berwick:
2D40 20:22 Ore - Brighton (arr. 20:35, dep. 20:35)
1F54 21:07 Haywards Heath - Eastbourne (arr. 21:33, dep. 21:34)
No more arrivals / departures thereafter until Monday morning.

Bexhill:
1G67 21:09 Eastbourne - Ashford International (arr. 21:23, dep. 21:24)
1G62 20:33 Ashford International - Eastbourne (arr. 21:23, dep. 21:24)
5F67 21:20 Ore - Eastbourne, (pass at 21:30)
No more arrivals / departures thereafter until Monday morning.

As for the Arun Valley (Pulborough, Amberley & Billingshurst) I gather these are going the month before the Eastbourne area ones and are scheduled for final abolition over the weekend of 15th / 16th March.

Not long to get photos in if you still wish to do so: I am a bit stuck because my camera is bust! Hope to get a new one ASAP though.

Dave

Sorry to bump this thread but I thought I would post an update.

It is understood that the Eastbourne area signalboxes have had a temporary stay of execution. I came across a post on a forum which stated this and asked, on a Facebook-based signaling-related group, for confirmation if this was true. The reply I got was that the East Sussex (Eastbourne area) resignalling scheme is "definitely off for several months, at least." It is being suggested that the abolition of the boxes at Berwick, Polegate, Hampden Park, Eastbourne, Pevensey, and Bexhill may now take place in October / November.

Heading further west, for anyone interested, it is also understood that the Poole - Wool resignalling scheme which was due to come into effect on Monday 07th April, has also been deferred. The date for the abolition of Poole, Wareham, Hamworthy and Wool, in favour of control from Basingstoke SCC, is unknown.

I am glad to have more time for photos of the Eastbourne area boxes: right before I could plan the trip to get some photos my camera packed up. I have now replaced it and will make the trip in the early-to-mid Summer.

HTIOI,
Dave

Brilliant pictures!

Out of interest, what does the 'Aspect Restricted' light next to some of the signals mean?

It's when the fringe box in advance of the signal needs to hold it at red, for a level-crossing etc. May also be held for a while after being cancelled, to allow an AHB to strike in if appropriate.

I've only ever seen indication of aspect restriction where non-cooperative axle counters are present.

When you carry out an Axle counter reset the signal will be held at danger to ensure that you talk the next train past the protecting signal at danger (having checked that the previous train arrived complete). This is to avoid the interlocking showing a train a proceed aspect when there may still be a train sitting in the failed section. The risk of a collision being mitigated by checking the completeness of the previous train and the slow speeds involved. There are other things that can make an axle counter fail but I won't get into those here.

I'm sure there are some more rule book caveats but I'm not a signaller.

You will get indication of restricted aspect if the signal would have normally cleared if it was not for the Axle counter section having failed (after being properly reset).

First of all, aspect restriction can apply to both cooperative (older style axel counters) and non-cooperative (newer style axel counters) and we have had both types on panel 7. With the conversion to non-cooperative axel counters on panel 7 in conjunction with the Arun Valley re-signalling we only have the new style. This is because someone has deemed that your not allowed to have both types operating together.

Now for aspect restriction. It applies when you've had to conduct a conditional axel counter reset. Once you've reset the axel counter section and its now showing clear. You can now set a route through that section in the normal way, points will move if required and you will get your normal route lights and the signal button light. However the protecting signal will not clear and the aspect restriction light will now come on. The rules now dictate that the 1st train will be required to pass the signal at danger under examination of the line rules and sweep the axel counter section. As soon as the train occupies the said axel counter section the aspect restriction light will go out and the new count in has begun once the correct count out has taken place, the axel counter section is restored to the interlocking and normal signalling can resume.

Closure date for the eastern section mechanical boxes has now been pushed back to Spring 2015, according to one of the LOMs on the Sussex Route.

Power surge from the national grid, it only took out the power supply to the smartlock the rest of the box was ok. But as Gatwick is also smartlock, it pretty much shut down the BML, not a good feeling losing all indications when you have trains moving in the area at the time, thank god everything is fail safe :-)

No, but at least everything is locked in that state so points won't be moving anytime soon. Depending on the severity of the outage and the reboot method, you might even have some routes still set albeit held at danger IIRC!

Episodes like this make me question whether the ROCs are a good idea. How long until 10% of the country is stopped because of one fault?

At least your phone concentrator was working so all the drivers could phone in to advise you of their technical SPAD's

I assume the TD was unaffected?

The only things that weren't effected were the MMI, CSR, GSMR and the PETS system, the rest of it was as dead as a dodo. They are not called technical SPADs anymore as everything other than the old Cat A SPAD are now deemed to be "an operating incident", (something about harmonising the rules across the EU rail network according to oppsweb).

Geoff if the points are locked in there last called position and thus won't move, then the system hasn't failed unsafe, so from my point of view that's failed safe enough, even if it's not nice to look at.

Hi all,

Sorry to bump this topic after it has been redundant for a while.

Doea anyone know what the current scheduled date is for the closures of the boxes around Eastbourne? Earlier this year I heard Easter 2015 but it is being suggested elsewhere that things may happen sooner.

Cheers,
Dave

The rumour from under the juice rail says the 2nd full week in November 2014 so maybe Friday the 14th to Monday 17th, or they could of ment the weekend before. Just waiting on the TOC to agree the possession times, but my manager said not to quote him so I won't and just call it a rumour. :-)

Well I think it may be a rumor as us drivers have to be briefed which last time took about 3 months to get everybody done as there was people off sick, a/l etc. Still if you here anything else i will be interested to hear.

Just looked on RTT for the weekend of 16th / 17th November: it seems there are variations afoot for the Saturday but, through Eastbourne station at least, there are no bus replacement services.

Saturday 16th:
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/EBN/2014/11/16/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

while Sunday seems to be a normal Sunday service.

Sunday 17th:
