Stopping Times (Real Life vs Simsig) 16/03/2014 at 15:00 #57129

Hello All,

I got some questions to do about the stopping time at stations and other locations in SimSig simulations. In the real life, by videos, (as I live in Brazil and can't go to England atm :P), most of the trains depart early of the stations, compared to timetable chart, and the stopping times, for example in ECML, (and i see many videos of this area), on the inner suburban services with Class 313, we have some variations:

- 30 seconds timetable = some drivers do 20 seconds and even 15 seconds at the stations (including Doors Open&Close).
- 60 seconds timetable = some drivers do 40 seconds and even 20 seconds at the stations (including Doors Open&Close).

I had a try to represent this in SimSig, i create some trains and put the real times, but all of the locations, i tick, "set down" and at dwell time i put 20 seconds, and got the sim running. I see that with this "mod" the trains got even closer to real life in performance, as i see in realtimetrains, some drives arrive 5 to 7 minutes early in the terminals, and depart early of the timetabled chart. I just want to share this idea with you guys, and make a suggestion to the next generation timetables, if possible to add a "Speed Variation" (same scheme as Driving Rules).

Example:

- 15 mph (Absolute or Percentage option) to get trains running + or - :

Absolute: +5 mph (The train will run at 20 mph.
Percentage: +33.33% (The train will run at 20 mph.

Absolute: -5 mph (The train will run at 10 mph.
Percentage: -33.33% (The train will run at 10 mph.

obs: I think this things may happen in the railway on some situations (trains late to make up time).

I have a Link of a video, as you guys can see and understand my point about stopping times:

2F68 Moorgate to Stevenage

MOG: 19:52
OLD: 19:54 - 19:54½
EXR: 19:57 - 19:57½
HHY: 19:59 - xx:xx½

obs: On the video let's assume 19:52:00 from 00:00:25 seconds.

MOG: 00:00:25
OLD: 00:02:25 - 00:02:46
EXR: 00:05:36 - 00:05:55
HHY: 00:07:30 - xx:xx:xx

MOG: 19:52:00
OLD: 19:54:00 - 19:54:21
EXR: 19:57:11 - 19:57:30
HHY: 19:59:05 - xx:xx:xx

I'm open to discuss the subject, if possible tell me what you think?

Cheers,
Thiago.

Early trains in Britain? Don't be so ludicrous!

On a serious note, I do think some random variation in stopping times would make things interesting.

It does happen. When I was Station Manager at Enfield Town most services were formed with class 315 units but running to cl305 timings, as the old units still substituted from time to time (and particularly in the peak). We had the devil's own job keeping them from running early, sometimes as much as 5 BT at Enfield!

I'm not sure what you're getting at- trains aren't allowed to depart before the advertised time. I suppose in reality a driver stopping at lots of small stations might make a minute or so up over the course of the journey, but the train will be held to time at stations with dispatchers.

Bear in mind there's often a few minutes recovery time built into the timetable on the approach to major stations, which could account for this- if the train's on time, it won't need to recovery and the platform might be ready and waiting. Also, there's often a difference between Public and Working times. Long-distance trains especially are advertised to arrive several minutes later than their working timetables.
