Reading a recent Rail magazine, I see that the Selby Swing Bridge is about to have some upgrade work carried out on it which reminded me of the road/rail bridge in Dordrecht Holland that I go over a couple of times a day and makes the Selby Swing Bridge look small fry. The road bridge is constructed like Tower bridge and works in a hinged configuration from both sides, but the rail bridge which carries the main line between Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht/Rotterdam is of the vertical lift configuration. They both lift together when any big height water traffic needs to get past, which is quite a few times a day. I got caught out by it last week and it looks pretty impressive to see the whole four track rail link being suspended in mid air. The following link on you tube gives you some idea of what happens. The vertical lift rail deck being part of the big tubular section at the end of the clip on the left hand side.
Also of note is the FERA train service going over it. This is still working because of the cancelled loco order from Italy. What a multitude of colour on the carriages.
