I mentioned my avatar in a host today, and was asked to post the full size pic.

It is a signal gantry at my home town Rugby. See http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/lms/lnwrrm901.htm for more info

What do the circles on the central arms denote?

On the LNWR, signals applying to the Slow or Goods Lines, or otherwise being used to identify signals applying to separate lines.

It's worth pointing out that the top and bottom sets of signals are co-acting arms, and it works out to be signals for three lines, which read into three through lines through the station, plus two extra lines on the right which aren't accessible from the leftmost line.

Another view of Rugby's famous signal gantry nicknamed the 'Rugby bedstead' with the GC bridge in the background. The LNWR stated it was the largest in the United Kingdom but this was refuted by the NER who believed their signal gantry at York was the largest. The small hut beneath the gantry is a fogman's hut used by 'fogmen' during poor visibility when they placed a number of detonators on the line to signal to engine drivers whether they could pass the signal safely or not.

Note that this large gantry got replaced by three normal colour-light signals that can show all that information and more, since they're four aspect and have subsidiaries below them. You can see these new signals in belly buster's image.
