Whilst studying Llangollen Signalman's pictures of Manchester Piccadilly SC on flickr, I noticed some black buttons with letters on. There are several in this image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/llangollen_signalman/13088350145/in/set-72157642212559905 at Salford Crescent (lettered O) and near Agecroft South Junction (lettered S and T). What are these? This webpage http://vinchad.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/a-visit-to-manchester-piccadilly.html also has some good views of the panel, and shows some lettered buttons in the Ardwick Junction area. They look like alternative route buttons. Looks like you can route from 303 signal via 2310 normal or reverse to get to the same destination.

Another question on the same set of photos. There one signal marked "wrong route signal". Does this means that it's susceptible to signalers routing incorrectly? Log in to reply |

" said:Another question on the same set of photos. There one signal marked "wrong route signal".Quite possibly, most of the traffic on the Down Slow is through traffic for Platform 14, but some of it terminates at Piccadilly. But what about those labelled O at Salford Crescent? - alternative routes do not seem to exist here. Log in to reply |

I'm not convinced about the Agecroft South Junction ones. There aren't alternative routes to the same signal; you'd have to set the route via 514 signal in two stages. I could just about imagine the S one is a mandatory via to stop a signaller making a mistake, but the T one doesn't make sense to me.
