My friend NSEFAN just answered this one:

9. Haresfield up goods loop, near Gloucester - the signal displays no aspect until a train is routed up to it.
Sorry,

That doesn't appear in the rule books except as a failed signal. The rest position was an official aspect with a specific meaning. The signals were not in the UK.

It was a speculative guess - St Johns station has two junctions, a short tunnel and a flyover in close proximity, and descriptions of the famous accident there often refer to the latter as "St Johns Flyover". I don't have anything on hand to check the official names of the junctions and tunnel though.

As the question says did, may I offer York - Northallerton where a considerable stretch was equipped with approach-lighted colour lights by the LNER, all of which were abolished as the later power signalling schemes were commissioned towards the end of the 1930s (I have an idea the last were abolished with the commissioning of Northallerton panel on 3rd September 1939).

Not in the UK, you're saying? In that case I think you must be referring to Bavaria which used to have a Hp Ru signal aspect.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Correct,

Bavarian stop signals had a "Ruhe" (Rest) position with the arm pointing directly down. It gave a blue light at night and meant (roughly)shunting allowed, no trains expected.

Forest Pines,

I've had a look at Quail and the Tunnel to the west of the station is Tanners Hill Tunnel. The Nunhead flyover is Hatherell Bridge. The road crossing the line near the station is St John's Vale, but I can't see any other tunnels in the vicinity.
I didn't say all the features were railway related!

7 (Closed) Black Bank near Ely.
The only one that did not need digging to make it below sea level ?
Berney Arms must be very close as the land is under the 0m contour.

8 Bourne End (could but does not)
Battersby

12
Dalston Junction
Stourbridge Junction ?

1. Berney Arms and Black Bank are both below the Zero contour, but the railway line looks to be on a embankment (very slight in the case of Berney Arms) so I think I will have to adopt the QI get out and say "Nobody Knows".

8. Correct with Battersby.
I've had a look at the Online sectional appendix and Bourne End station doesn't seem to be part of either of the single line sections. The platform length is quoted as 47m so you could just get in two 153s with half a meter to spare!

12. Correct for Dalston Junction. There is still a physical connection to the Stourbridge Town branch, even though it isn't signalled for passenger use. I think we now halve all the "non-junction" junctions.

Thanks for the answers. One thing I like about the quiz is that I learn a lot (and I set the questons").
