In the Exeter sim, why doesn't the Topsham/Exmouth section follow the "Up Waterloo" and "Down Waterloo" convention, rather than the "Up (Bristol)" and "Down (Bristol)" convention (used in the remainder of the sim with the exception of the Crediton line) since the Topsham line joins the "Down Waterloo" line well before it reaches Exeter Central?

The single line from Exmouth Jn to Exmouth is known as the Exmouth Branch. There are no Up & Down lines on the branch.

Presumably maxand is referring to the directions that the trains are shown as moving in the F2 window.

There could be a number of reasons for this. One practical one I would suggest is that whether you use the Waterloo or Paddington route to London, a train can only be heading towards London, i.e. 'up', if it is heading away from Exmouth!

If you're asking why it does that in Simsig, then of course it's because it does that in real life. (your favourite answer)

If you're asking why the railways decided to name it that way then it's a convention that on branch lines you always go Down to the terminating point and Up to the mainline line. There will of course be exceptions dotted around the network however a lot of those exception may be historical prior to the lines becoming a branch line.

It does match the "Up Waterloo" and "Down Waterloo" convention, both are up towards London and down away from London

However, an Up Train will travel from Exmouth in an Up direction and then travel on the Down Waterloo before entering Exeter St Davids in an Up direction.

And we won't go through the iterations of added irony at Plymouth if there's ever a re-opening via Okehampton as it was pre- 1968......

Oh, but what fun Exeter St Davids would be if the line reopened - you could depart for both Plymouth and London in both directions!

Thanks, that's the explanation I needed. Also thanks for including a pic of the NR sectional appendix.

Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I find it easy to misinterpret the Up or Down as displayed on the F2 Train List. It would have been nice to see them, for example, on the passing loops at Topsham. However, this is easily remedied by adding even more stickies (in different colours!) marked "UP >" OR "< DOWN" as required.
