I'm not sure whether this should go here or in the sim wish list.

Could there be any mileage in "bridge" sims that would take the place of an existing sim in a chain, so an extensive "chain" could be worked without needing quite so many people?

For example (although the saving would only be one workstation, but perhaps it gives the flavour): perhaps someone is trying to set up a chain of New St and Derby, but of course Aston's in the way. If there were a bridge for Aston, it could be chained in place of the actual sim. Trains heading out of NS would head into the bridge and those going through would emerge from t'other end into Derby at about the right time. The end result would be that if NS was well up the wall, trains entering Derby would be suitably delayed/wrong order.

Rather more ambitiously, someone might want to run Wolves and Coventry but not care to try and keep up with NS in the middle. A suitable bridge would allow that chain to be created.

Ideally a bridge would work with existing sim timetables so it could be chained without needing special timetables to be written. One of the reasons I wonder about this being a sim wishlist item is that each would have to be programmed individually, albeit the data needed would be rather less.

As I see it, a bridge would basically consist of a big queue with facilities for knocking out terminating trains and those routed to other destinations and likewise for knocking in those that enter the queue by originating or coming from elsewhere. The queue would simply hold trains for the appropriate elapsed time before releasing them to the next sim in the chain. A bridge for a big sim like NS would, of course, have a number of entries and exits to other sims; NS in particular would be a particularly complicated one, needing overtaking locations as well as removing/interposing locations. But if it only has to manipulate the timetable rather than be a complete signalbox, it can be left to work itself rather than needing the 2 or 3 people it would take to keep it all going as a complete sim.

Any thoughts?

I've thought in a similar vein before, with a 'Clay Cross Junc' to chain Derby to Sheffield without having in invoke the whole of the Trent simulation.
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.
