So how does attachments work?

I am a real old newcomer , my limited experience of railway work occured between 1951-1960. I worked on the foot plate for a while at 1D. then became a Power signal Line man on the LTE.
What I have seen on this web site, leads me to believe that railway signalling has morphed into the systems which were being pioneered by the LTE.
In the late 50s, One man controlled the entire northern line from a control room at Charing Cross.
Signal boxes over other parts of the system were being turned into "Automated control rooms". It was like watching an invisible man operating the rows of small levers on the frame. There were time table "machines"directing traffic. The signalman (signaller) became the human watch dog in case of an irregularety. which often happened, Like a "passenger pukes", or a door gets wrestled out of the grooves by sardined passengers. Which would normally mean the train was cut out, thus puting the "Time Table machine" out of step.
In those days they ran on "punched tape" as did some of the train describers which indicated each trains destination on the station platforms. The driver of every train had a communcation set which was carried in the cab. In the event of a problem
a conversation could be exchanged between driver and signaller.
The signal engineering department seemed to have the final say when it came to stopping a train, they missed out badly at Moorgate. Even so, at the time it was way ahead of BR.
