Possible 24 Hour Session 14/11/2015 at 21:04 #77694

Hi guys.

Yesterday/today, a person called Matt Peddlesden streamed for 24 hours on Twitch to raise money for Children In Need.

This has inspired me to host a 24 hour session on SimSig but since I am too young to raise money for charities or for any other reasons, I will only be hosting the session for the fun of it.

I am not sure if this has been done before, but if it hasn't and if you guys think that this is a good idea, then please let me know in the comments section.

It's been done once before I think, played at real time on King's Cross. The host did the 24 hours straight and people dropped in and out as they could.

Cool. And how long ago was this?

There's no age limit on raising money for charities- tons of kids do sponsored things for a wide range of causes. That said, I don't think many people would sponsor a 24-hour SimSig session.

On a more general note, doesn't the new-fangled hosting server allow hosts to be transferred, thus allowing the host to be changed without stopping the simulation?

Also, wasn't there also a roster drawn up last time to make sure the simulation had enough staff? You don't want to hit the evening peak and find everyone logging out, especially if you've been up for 20 hours and your brain's turned to mush.

Thanks for commenting.

You have raised a valid point and to avoid this problem, I am going to have the sim time in sync with the real world's time (GMT). That way, when it gets busy in the sim, a fair amount of people should be present to help out.

Actually won't most people be out at the sim's busiest time as peak time is when everyone is going to or coming from work?

Simple solution. Do it on a bank holiday Monday

And let's not forget about people in other time zones.

The concept has come up quite a few times. But it's only ever been done in practice once that I can remember. It needs a lot of planning and thought of how it's going to work.

Agreed. That's why I said Possible 24 Hour Session. If I do go through with it, it will probably be way into the future.

its a figure of speech, it was just making the point that people work bank holiday as its mainly only teachers and some other professions that are guarantee the bank holiday off, others just have to be lucky

The idea intrigues. Sure, some people will be busy, some will be unwilling, but if it can be concerted then why not? If people can't make it that's fine, but if a timetable of users can be assembled (and if TheBVE is willing to do that) it might be worth a try. And I think that was theBVE's point - he's asking "Is anyone interested, and if so, how many?"

I'm willing. Please keep me informed.

I'm up for helping out with this. But as mentioned above a timetable needs to be drawn up. It needs proper planning, I for one am willing to help out with planning and as a student, depending on days I can always help out by covering a graveyard shift or two.

Indeed it was, hosted by 'Afro' (in Dublin?) I recall, KX ran in real time from 0001 to 2359 on a Sunday, I think I did about 16 hrs duty.

Don't recall staffing being a major issue,as a couple of folk can run it in the wee small hours and our Antipodean colleagues are helpful too.

KX was a good choice, but a sim with ARS to cover any gaps might be an option too. If advertised in advance, you might be pleasantly surprised by how many drop by.

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

I'd love to take part in a 24 hour session. I would only be available for any decent length of time on a Saturday or Sunday unfortunately.
