Generally I've noticed this on the sub-surface rather than tube lines. Given the age of some of the kit used - in particular the District area of the city which dates back to the early 1960s - certain destinations were not originally programmed in / accounted for as at that time trains would normally run A-B and would "never" have run A-C or B-E. Therefore, there is a default description of "Check front of train" for any description that cannot be shown by the kit at that location. However, within the control room, the description may show properly. An example we have on the Metropolitan Line side of the city, is that we currently have trains which run from Aldgate, via King's Cross to locations on the west end of the District line. Many of these are shown correctly in the control room, but show as "check front" on the platform - mainly because the original installation of the platform describers did not account for endless destinations, but were installed with the regular services. Going back to before dot-matrix describers, the original light boxes were only able to show a select number of destinations. Dot Matrix describers opened things up a little, but not to the point where we can show everything. Most other lines have/had this same description being able to be show. However, more straightforward end-to-end lines are less likely to have trains running to non-standard destinations. Log in to reply |

It is shown in the Wembley Park and Neasden area because at these locations the two lines interface in order to travel to/from each end of Neasden Depot. The remainder of the line between Neasden and Finchley Road has been left as a "guide" but the Signalling Centre at Baker Street has no control over those sections. Having looked at the link given to llangollen signalman Flickr site I notice that at Farringdon and Moorgate there appears to be some sort of indication firstly a round visual and there is also a small white square just wondering what these are for if they work. The round visual indicates if control of that particular area has been taken by our emergency control room - a back-up room which can manually control the areas between King's Cross and Aldgate. The small white square illuminates red if communication is lost between the main computers at Baker Street and the computers based at each site. The site computers all have a copy of the timetable sent to them each night, and only need to communicate with the computers at Baker Street for manual routing requirements, or for amendments made to the timetable. Other than that, in theory, the site computers can continue to operate the area even if communication is lost. There are times of course that this doesn't always happen... Metcontrol, I never noticed which site had them, so your back up control only does certain sites and others are left to work themselves. Now having looked through the photos I notice below Edgware Rd/Baker St that there is a switch which to me looks like a volume control but not the same as the others.

The area which can be controlled from the emergency room is Great Portland Street through to and including Aldgate / Aldgate East and east of Tower Hill. All areas under the control room's control have Interlocking Machine Rooms (IMRs) which contain miniature air-operated lever frames which the computer controls. In the event of emergency running, the control and air is removed from the frames and levers reversed for the routes required - this may mean for certain areas that reversing or alternative routes are not available, but a through route can be selected. This route will act like an automatic signalling area and will clear each time a train leaves the section. The IMRs require to be staffed by a signal technician and a duty manager. The whole set-up has never been used "in anger" however, generally the plan would be to staff the emergency room for the city area, and where possible staff and set-up each of the IMRs for through running. The switch that looks like a volume button relates to the monitor on top of the diagram which is a mimic of the platform information screens at Baker Street. Turning the switch scrolls through the various platform displays and what they are showing on each platform and on the main concourse displays. Metcontrol, I take it that the emergency room is just a few computers where the staff can control those areas in the city but with reduced facilities but enough to run a limited service. The switch changes which platform departures are being viewed.

The crossover has been used quite a lot actually. Last Saturday (3rd Jan) saw plenty of usage - and I should know as I was on duty and utilising it fully! We had a failure on the approach to King's Cross from Farringdon, and quite a few trains were reversed eastbound to westbound via both platforms. Ironically, one of the reversing moves failed midweek this week (teething troubles ) Log in to reply |
