Greetings gents, I'm fairly new to this sim (purchased less than a month ago), so still learning the TT's and the order of the services. I'm quite lucky to have a Cab Ride DVD of the C2C running this line, so can get a visual image of the areas on the panels. Just a small question regarding the level crossings. I've seen some pictures of the Upminster IECC, and the 4th workstation is controlling all the level crossings, expect Pitsea Hall CCTV. Now to replicate that, one would simply run the sim with the crossings off... But I find that then the sim feels almost empty... My question is this, how soon or early are the level crossings lowered when an approaching train is in the section? For example, at Pitsea Hall, coming from Southend Central, on the cab ride dvd I have, the train enters the station with the barriers up, starting signal at danger, which then clears while you loading passengers. Others are all clear by the time the trains gets there. So do you as the signaller clear the crossing once the route is set through the crossing, or do you normally wait until the train passes the first double yellow on the approach to the crossing? The idea is to keep the time lowered as short as possible, without causing delay to the train. If there are no stations, a good rule of thumb is to lower the crossing when the train is approaching the last green. If there is a station on the approach, lower it as the train is arriving (assuming the dwell time is about a minute), then the signal will be clear when the train is ready to depart. You may have to teak these rules for the location in question. If there are no stations in the way, trains shouldn't pass signals at Y or YY, as the driver will start slowing down.
