Just curious as to why some trains take the "scenic route" (IE: long way) from York to Selby via Church Fenton and Gascoigne Wood rather than directly via the Hambleton North Curve when there are no intermediate stops?

A lot of it will be for route knowledge retention, for instance down my neck of the woods the last train of the night ( http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W40843/2016/05/19/advanced ) and the first train of the morning ( http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W40840/2016/05/19/advanced ) are both routed via Bromley South and New Beckenham to allow Tonbridge drivers to keep their knowledge up of the 'Mid Kent' line for times of engineering works on the main lines.

In my days of driving at Tonbridge both of these trains used to call all stations via the main line.....

Hope the links actually work.

SHerburn-in-Elmet needs service somehow! It's between Church Fenton and Gascoigne Wood.

Can also be for pathing reasons - a cranky old DMU trundling along at 75mph on the ECML is not pleasurable to a GNER VTEC approaching behind at 125mph.

As a trainer/assessor my response would be "RTFQ"! :yikes  I did say "with no intermediate stops". :-)

That bit makes sense. The question really referred to freight. In such case, wouldn't it be more logical to hold it at York a little longer to follow a fast pax train?

Some only stop at Sherburn which is not shown on either sim, so it could be assumed that that detail was missed.

Depends when the next express starts chasing its tail!

Dont forget trains bound for Thorne still have to reach Joan Croft a few miles off sim, slow down and clear the Junction. And quite a few will run through to doncaster to access Decoy Yard. There is no regulating point for them at all, only Arksey on the Down. Trains via GW can be held at Hambleton, Church Fenton, Colton South and Sherburn Junction. Trains also go via Milford and Knottingley and rejoin at Shaftholme or will use the flyover.
