For those of you who maybe interested in this, there is a new 3 part series starting on BBC FOUR on Monday 11th July, 2016 from 2000 - 2100 called Trainspotting Live. Episode 1 states in Didcot Peter Snow is joined by train lovers, collectors & enthusiastsacross Britain. Peter challenges Ian McMillan to write a poem about Flying Scotsman. Eposode 2: Peter Snow & Dr. Hannah Fry present live from Didcot Railway Centre where the focus is on diesel locomotives from Class 37s to the Inter City 125. Episode 3: Dr. Hannah Fry & Peter Snow look towards the future of rail travel. Hannah explores the timetables work & whether they can squeeze extra capacity in the future. Personally I shall watch each of these programmes as the last time the BBC did anything in depth regarding the running of the railways was back in 1988 when they ran a series of programmes over the course of 1 week called 'Rail Watch' which I video taped at the time. They interviwed the Eastern Region General Manager & the Regional Operations Manager & had reporters in York Regional Control Offices, Neville Hill depot & various other locations within the Eastern Region of BR as it was then. I'll be specifically interested in seeing how accurate they are in episode 2 when discussing diesel traction as I've had alot of years experience working on & with different locomotive classes over my railway career. Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone else out there hadn't heard about this new series starting on Monday. I think it may also be available on the BBC iplayer. After watching it I can fully understand why other people have the same opinion as her. I must admit though, watching a Black 5 holds more appeal than watching an Airbus 320 landing at Heathrow. It is good to know that there are people more crackers than we are and who knows what her indoors would say if I was one of them......bring on episode 2 tomorrow night for the continuing story of the flying banana...... Half way through on catch up now. Very odd television indeed. Dick Strawbridge absolutely losing it over 66s is one of the more bizarre pieces of telly I've seen. I imagine the majority of the hobby would have been tutting and snorting their way through tonight's 66-heavy programme. Maybe the 37 show tomorrow will be more welcome! Log in to reply |

I watched it & to be honest there wasn't alot in this episode that appealed very much to me. I'm more interested in episode 2, but as I've never seen a programme on TV before which apparently is totally dedicated to diesel traction of the BR era it will be interesting hoe accurate there infoon the various classes is. Personally for me I'd prefer it if the episode concentrated on the switch from steam to diesel in the 1960s & went through each of the different types of diesels that were created to work on the railways from the 1960s onwards. Some proved very good as diesel loco designs whereas other only lived for a very short time due to there low availability. Along with historic film of them in action I suspect would be a step to far for the BBC to achieve. The presenters weren't definately railway orientated in any respect for me. Still if this is the first attempt maybe at some point in the future this kind of programme could evolve. There's plenty of historical programmes detailing WW1 & WW2 as well as the various kinds of planes, ships & tanks that fought on all side. Yet for this country who invented railways there doesn't seem to be very much in the way of programmes on TV which go into detail the evolution of the railways in the UK.

have to wonder what the point of filming it is if you're going to scream and shout over the audio and effectively ruin any chance of enjoying it a second time (or other people enjoying it a first time).

Bizarre, and completely lacking in any sincerity on the part of the presenting team - very obviously and deliberately overdoing the "excitement" to the detriment of the people they're meant to be documenting. BBC4 had an opportunity to do this well, they have failed spectacularly. Last edited: 12/07/2016 at 09:44 by JamesN Log in to reply |

To be fair Peter Snow was just being Peter Snow. Possibly the most bizarre bit was the mathematician lady telling us how fast a train would have to be travelling to not be able to read the number having just read the number of King Edward II wrong at 10mph! A complete waste of air time I thought  , apart from the footage of KE2. Dr Hannah ought to be explaining something technical like how an injector works (very clever physics). I can't bring myself to watch tonight, and I'm doing something else Wednesday.

I am moving from West Hampstead to Didcot ROC later this year. I watched it in the hope Didcot ROC would feature for the signalling side of the railway. Snort, just a couple of minutes at York in episode 2!

The satirical enthusiast groups on Facebook have been following Trainspotting Live too. The Armchair Enthusiast Society has come up with a rather excellent way to follow the program, though perhaps "Flying Banana" should be added as an entry for the more adventurous drinkers out there: Quote: THE TRAINSPOTTING LIVE DRINKING GAME"The Bash Mash" has also been hard at work following Trainspotting Live, as can be seen on their page. There was Trains with Pete Waterman and Mark Williams on the Rails - both were much more educational/documentary type programmes than this.

Don't you just love it when TV presenters show us how NOT to be safe, standing track side (even if it is a perserved line) without the HI-VIS vest. I know that the movements can be controlled more on a preserved line but thats besides the point, it sends the wrong message, to people. Bet the HSE are having kittens over that one  Log in to reply |
