Using Loader v4.5.12 there is now an option in the View Menu shown as "stacked routes". A search of the Wiki produces no hits for "stacked routes". Can anyone enlighten me about what this function is or does, please?

Can anyone enlighten me about what this function is or does, please? Its core code amendments for a sim currently in development. It has no impact on operation of current simulations, more documentation will be made available when sim(s) using the feature are released. Log in to reply The following user said thank you: postal |

I think stacked routes are when several routes can be set in advance from a signal in a specific order. So if you had two trains approaching using the main route followed by a third using the branch you could program two mains and one branch and the signalling equipment will remember it and set it as soon as the route becomes free.

There are many different implementations of stacked/stored routes around the world - though the UK does not allow it. A common example is a single line with a passing loop, with two trains approaching from opposite directions. While you're likely to be able to set routes for each train into the loop, you have to wait for the trains to arrive before you can set the routes in each direction back onto the single line. By stacking (or storing) the request the interlocking (or control system) automatically sets them when they become free, avoiding the need for the signaller/dispatcher to be present at the exact time. The different implementations relate to the rules that determine whether routes are set absolutely sequentially, or when any becomes available, or partial locking/reservation (think of a complex station throat where points become reserved as the preceding train clears them). That's rather interesting, because I think I recall Modern Railways' description of the new Kings Cross powerbox (1976 or so!!!) reporting that up to six routes could be set up in the station throat to call sequentially as each in turn cleared (which I think would be the definition of stacked routes).
