I am not sure if anyone else uses a homeplug network. These allow you to extend your wired network into other rooms using the power ring main in your house. You just plug the devices into different mains sockets then plug a network cable into the back of each and it magically connects the two. In many ways this is favourable to a wireless setup which can be unreliable over longer distances. Anyway ... for a long time I have used Devolo devices as they were one of the pioneers and well respected. On some recent hosting sessions, I have had one the homeplugs stop working, losing all connections - annoying for everyone. After some research it turns out the devolos can get hot when handling lots of data requests (i.e. in the middle of a sim!), and then just stop working until you reset them. Once I found this out I decided to try a differnt brand - I have gone with some cheapish (£25) TP-Link AV600s to see if these are better. I will report back. I just thought I would post this if anyone else is using (or considering) these and may have seen similar issues. Log in to reply The following user said thank you: JamesN |

Do they get hot when streaming a video (YouTube or Netflix) and shut down? The amount of data SimSig uses is fairly small. I'll have to look what the exact model is but I use Belkin ones and I don't have any trouble. Only issue I have is the connection drops every now and then but not all the time, to solve unplug the cable at the plug end of unplug and plug back in.. Not sure if it's to do with the internal wiring of my house as I've had it rewired a year or so ago from the dated 1960-70s lot. Aaron (AJRO) | Timetable Writer Log in to reply |

There's a long catalogue of people with a "me too" in the comments on this blog post. I think the issue with SimSig is more related to handling the multiple connections which means the interal network switch has more work to do, even though the overall data volumes are lower. Possibly slightly off piste but I find that occasionally my/my wife's/my son's laptop loses contact with the outside world while still in contact with the router. However, no one else in the family has the problem at the same time - very peculiar. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Karl suggested setting fixed IPs on the router which I've still to look into. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |
