Noticed on Birmingham New Street, that I can set a route from both intermediate signals on Platform 8 and both will display a yelllow aspect. Is this normal at New Street due to the lack of interlocking or is it a bug within the sim? Have attached a screenshot of the issue.

On the face of it it would appear so. However the control tables don't mention opposing signals like most control tables do - even if the interlocking implicitly prohibits it by design.

It's an old Westpac Mk1 so either:
1. Nobody cared back then
2. It's implicit in the interlocking's wiring.

Without further information I'd lean towards #2 solely because you could potentially have two trains outside the station, both with green aspects which would end up being followed by a red at the mid-platform signal as the opposing train entered the platform.

Hadn't realised that you could set routes in opposing directions like that. Just tried it and found that it works on Platforms 1 to 9.

Green followed by Red is an invalid aspect sequence for colour-light areas. I would be extremely surprised if any derogation was made, especially in such a critical location.

More seriously, what if one of the opposing trains continues through the mid-platform yellow while the other has only just passed the outer green? The latter train has then effectively received a Green aspect into an occupied track!

This has got to be a bug.

1-4 and 6-9 but not 5, which operates as you would expect.

Does the subroute locking not prevent two routes being set in from opposing ends while the mid platform signals are both off?

I'm struggling to think of a scenario where the aspects as displayed could cause a problem- no route can be set into either end of the platform because the direction locking prevents it.

Of more concern is that, with both sections of the platform occupied, a call-on route can be set from both signals simultaneously, and both signals clear, so theoretically two trains could shunt into the other part of the platform at the same time.

What happens if you set routes into the platform, *then* clear the mid-platform signals?

That's reasonable, then - though still a little strange.

As others have pointed out, my scenario is not in fact possible. The worst case scenario is two calling-on aspects towards each other, which - in terms of aspect displayed to the driver - is allowed even in this day and age (opposing locking omitted).

It's curious why it's not specifically listed in the control tables when other control tables of the same era - but different interlocking types - specifically do list it even though in those cases the interlocking inherently prevents it anyway.

It'll get fixed.
