I believe they are as they are provided by a system external to SimSig. You can hide any individually if you choose to for any reason. Most of mine tend to be for baby toys and clothes these days, and I've certainly never seen the one in the original post. Adverts, their perceived appropriateness, and how you can try and manipulate them was gone over on the forum a couple of years ago. Interestingly the ad i see in the top corner now says 'get started' with a huge green button, not too dissimilar to the get started in a green box on the SimSig splash at the top of the page. Very misleading if you're a newbie.
