I'm pretty sure adverts are based on your previous browsing history.

I believe they are as they are provided by a system external to SimSig. You can hide any individually if you choose to for any reason.

Most of mine tend to be for baby toys and clothes these days, and I've certainly never seen the one in the original post.

Adverts, their perceived appropriateness, and how you can try and manipulate them was gone over on the forum a couple of years ago.

I don't actually believe this to be the case for the following reasons.

1. I have had an advertisement appear for a dating website. I've never visited one!
2. I won't mention the advertisers' name, but I've not been to their website, neither have I searched for a winter coat, or any clothing for that matter.

Interesting.

The adverts on this website are Google Adwords (if that's what they're still called). If I go onto the Google homepage and look for a toaster, and then go onto this site, eventually I'll get an advert for a toaster. The fact you've never been on a dating website doesn't exclude the potential for them to come up - but in theory something you have searched for in the past would be more likely.

We do block some ads, mostly those known to be a bit risque, and those that have phrases like "Download now!" or "Click here to install" - which is misleading for a software website.

Interestingly the ad i see in the top corner now says 'get started' with a huge green button, not too dissimilar to the get started in a green box on the SimSig splash at the top of the page. Very misleading if you're a newbie.

Funny because I look at the Watford FC web pages frequently and I have never had any ads offering a new striker.......

They are all "working" for Royal Mail.

I'll see if I can block that one. Thanks.

I certainly have NO interest in finding an Arab woman to date....nor am I on ANY dating websites, NOR have I searched for anything relating to dating......

Doesn't help the finances of SimSig which is grateful for the revenue from the adverts (presumably generated from the click-through traffic).

No issue with the ads showing - just wondered how it picked up on an Arab dating website one haha!

Some are just random, or very tenuously linked to what you might have searched for before. Imagine somebody that has never used Google before, or at least Google sees a query but doesn't have an account to link it to, how would it serve any ads if it didn't have any browsing history? So it has to serve some random ones.

Does SimSig only get money from click-throughs or is there money for displaying the ads?

Last time I looked it was only click-throughs. I disabled video/Flash ads as they are so intrusive, but I think those may generate a tiny amount of income without clicking on them - more if you do click on them.

Edit: Just had an advert for tractors, and they aren't exactly high on my shopping list or in my searches!
