The station yard was taken OOU last weekend (03/12 or 04/12). Goods lines have been under possession all this week to facilitate lifting of the station yard, and I believe the Goods lines from LNW Jn to Derby North Jn are to be taken OOU tomorrow 11/12.

Hi all, Progress is progress and this is badly overdue with a layout not now suited at all to modern traffic flows but I couldn't help a tinge of sadness when I read this. I spent ten of the happiest years of my railway career on the back desk at Derby in the 80s and 90s, with a great bunch of signallers (or was it signalmen then?). Rarely have I had a job in the operational side of the railway that I would have turned up and done for nothing but this was one of them. It was just fun to be there - great craic and the job getting done well. I thought back to all of the characters I knew from that time, many of them no longer with us and wishing I could do back in time and do it all again. Great times.. It's one of the reasons why Birmingham New Street has hung on for so long - that and slower VDU-based mouse/trackerball control than NX push button panels. I would have thought it has more to do with the engineering derogations that must be sought not to provide the overlap in the first place. Birmingham New Street will present a similar challenge when that is done.
