I just had a points failure at points 842, which is just north of York station where the Harrogate line diverges from the Down Slow. Using the F11 Incident Control Panel I attempted to hand crank the points. It said normal detection was available, so selected Hand crank Normal but this set the points for the Harrogate line rather than the Down Slow. I would have expected the Normal position to be for the Down Slow and the Reverse position to be for the Down Harrogate. Am I doing something wrong here or is there some error in my logic? If normal detection is available why would you hand crank them? Left clicking the points will key them to the normal position and you'll get detection. Conversely right clicking will key them reverse, but in this case they will flash out of correspondance. Thanks for the quick reply, Karl. My usual process on a points failure is. Can I wind the points to either the normal or reverse position to keep the trains running? In this case, I thought I wanted the normal position as this was for the "main" line. When I hand cranked them normal, they were set for the "branch". I was wondering if there is a data error in the sim. S&T have now fixed the points failure so the job is up and running again. Chris Log in to reply |

There are plenty of points on various sims where 'normal' is not displayed as straight but as diverging. A good example is Wolverhampton where this affects roughly half of the points in the station - simply due to the fact that the approach to the station is curved in real life but has been 'straightened' on the panel. Other station throats also contain a number of points defying logic, just because the view in SimSig is schematic.

IECCs and the like have a command to specifically to show the normal lie of each point. It's fairly common, whether on screen or on panels because it's virtually impossible to show every point with normal horizontal unless you start creating unnecessary wiggles on the screen. For example, at Werrington Junction (on the Peterborough sim), points 1274 (Up Spalding to Up Slow) are normal towards the branch line, not straight along the main line. Drawing those with the normal position horizontal would not only - as Geoff says - need an unnecessary wiggle, it would also not match what the track looks like in real life.also contain a number of points defying logic, just because the view in SimSig is schematic.I'm not sure that's a good way to describe it (defying logic), Log in to reply |
