Hello

Would anyone know when bidirectional running first commenced from Queen Street to Cowlairs?

Thanks very much

Tim

The answer is around December 2016, with completion of the EGIP improvements to Glasgow Queen Street and the Cowlairs tunnel. According to earlier editions of Quail Maps, the Cowlairs incline was signalled for bi-di working, but, in practice, I never experienced it, and doubt whether it was used. Since the completion of the EGIP works, arriving at GLQ I have been surprised to find myself passed "wrong line" by a departing train.

I have heard it said that it's been used for overtaking, though when, why and whether true or not I've not got a clue.

Key dates here are 1967 for the opening of Queen Street panel at Cowlairs box and 1998 for the replacement panel. I should imagine bi-di signalling wasn't provided until 1998 when the panel was renewed but can't say for sure.
