I don't think this one has been raised previously...

In reality, MP414 is very close to 2405pts, the convergence of the lines from P4 and P3, well in advance of the fouling point (I've also seen a scheme plan which confirms this). I'd suggest that it shouldn't be possible to set a route from MP418 or from MP403/405 to MP445, i.e. to/from P3 eastwards, with TRM occupied.

Under normal circumstances, when a route is set to MP414 and a train occupies section TRM from the Deansgate direction, the overlap will not drop out and the behaviour is as you state - obviously if occupied from the Piccadilly direction it will have no effect on the overlap.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

Thanks both. I’ll admit that I’ve only tried this, out of curiosity, by occupying TRM through the incident control panel - surely this should have the same effect though? You could have a train signalled in or even talked in from the Piccadilly end, stopping inside clear of 414 yet still outside the fouling point - what protects this?

Not sure of this specific case, but it's not uncommon for flank locking to only apply if a certain subroute is set.

My apologies - you're right, the down routes to 445 require RM clear. The up direction is protected by the overlap that will never drop.

Cheers Geoff, that makes sense. There still seems to be something missing though - a down arrival into P4, stopping foul of 2405pts but not protected by the overlap in this case, could be followed by an up direction movement from 418?

No - points 2405 are locked reverse until TC TRM clears.
