Reversing at Cornbrook junction 20/12/2018 at 20:00 #114189

Whilst working on Stockport I noticed a number of trains terminate at deans gate before running empty to cornbrook junction (timetabled 2 minutes) and then reversing back into deansgate.

Is there a missing crossover and shunt signal on the sim, or was the reversal done somewhere else?

The reversal was done in a reversing siding at Trafford Park East Junction (as seen on the Piccadilly sim).
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

It's not present on the 1990s layout.

I think I've found a picture of the missing crossover:

And the layout post metrolink pre Trafford Park reversing siding:

And here's one with the mystery crossover. I can't tell clearly from the definition but it looks like a GF release to work it?

The Deansgate reversals post-Metrolink were originally done using the truncated remains of the Altrincham route at Cornbrook Jn (east of Trafford Park), with the up & down lines connected to form a stub siding which ended just before Old Trafford tunnel. Slightly oddly, that meant the switched diamond crossover with 50mph running on both routes was still in place for some time. This junction is what you see pictured in one of the Flickr photos, complete with switched diamonds on the panel. The crossover you see in another photo is the old emergency crossover at Cornbrook, never used for timetabled manoeuvres.

The situation continued until construction of the new A56 (Bridgewater Way) at which point a new, very expensive, siding was constricted at Trafford Park. Wiser heads would have routed the service to Salford Crescent, but that's another story.

My Piccadilly 1993 timetable also contains details.
