Winsford SB is a country box on the outskirts of Winsford. The box is a unique insight with part lever frame [One Click Signals] and the other half NX Panel [Pull & Push System]. Winsford controls are relatively busy section of WCML between Crewe, Runcorn & Warrington with the average line speed of 100 to 125EPS. The section of line sees quite a handful of passenger flows mixed in with various freights. Approx 17miles between Preston Brook and Coal Yard Fringes that doesn’t include Sutton Weaver to Coal Sidings which is 18miles. Winsford Signal Box is due to be closed in CP6 2019-2024 and transferred to Rugby ROC, although I would of thought Manchester ROC would have been ideal. If Winsford SB SimSig was to be investigated it would chain to Liverpool-Runcorn Sim, Warrington PSB Sim & [Crewe Coal Yard SB & Crewe PSB – If they do come along]. This would be an ideal one to two player sim, one been on the frame and the other on the NX Panel. Although this can be ran as a single player. So, what does Winsford fringe with well the answer is 4 lots of pass overs to boxes and a ROC. Sutton Weaver fringes with Runcorn Workstation at Manchester ROC, previously Runcorn SB Preston Brook fringes with Warrington PSB Hartford CLC fringes Greenbank SB [Cheshire East Line, correct me if I’m not so correct] Coal Yard fringes with Crewe Coal Yard which in turn fringes with 2 boxes been Crewe PSB and Crewe Salop Jn. Various trains are from mostly Virgin Trains, London North Western and Northern ECSs. 2 tph Euston to Glasgow or Edinburgh in each direction including ECS jobs. 4 tpd Euston to Blackpool North in each direction includes ECS jobs. 1 tph Euston to Lime Street in each direction includes ECS jobs. 1 tph Euston/Birmingham to Lime Street in both directions by London North Western. 4 tpd Crewe/Allerton/Stockport these are ECS movements from Northern. Various freight flows from Class 0s, Class 3s, Class 4s, Class 6s & Class 7s. Freight services in this area can be quite high depending on the day of the week, Monday evening sees anything upto 25 freights between 2100-2230hrs these sometimes have move out the way of expresses but around this time of the night the freight usually gets the priority. Many freight services crosses over the mainlines at Hartford Jn and to/from Hartford CLC, these are Biomass, Binliners and Aggregate Stone jobs from Peak Forest. To keep the single line section clear between Hartford Jn & Hartford CLC these services take priority on the junction and will cross onto the Down Slow and wait at Acton Bridge South Jn for any passing services. It's not unique in having a frame and panel there's several boxes like that. Harrogate and Banbury South for instance. This would make more sense being a panel on a Crewe Sim if Crewe is including all the perepheral boxes. "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Log in to reply |

Boxes noted in this thread so far separate the methods of operation to different geographic areas of the layout. Another box to make a special note of is Little Mill (on the Hereford sim), which has interlocking between the NX and frame controls, giving the area a hybrid method of working. According to the British Power Signalling Register, Little Mill is the last remaining Lever/NX hybrid installation in the country. The Little Mill lever frame diagram gives a good indication of this, with the signals numbered 100 and 115 being controlled by the NX panel, but the points they route over and subsidiary aspects associated with them being controlled by the lever frame. Either way there would be too much going on with Crewe PSB SimSig if Crewe Bas Hall Jn SB, Crewe Salop Goods Jn, Crewe Steelworks SB & Crewe Coal Yard was to be all included. Crewe and its local boxes would make a perfect sim of course but Winsford would make its own box. Aaron (AJRO) | Timetable Writer Log in to reply |
