What happens if you want to cross a user-worked crossing on Christmas Day? Presumably there is no signaller in the box to answer the phone so how can you legally get permission to cross? Is there a recorded message saying there are no trains running, or are calls diverted to some central location?

In most cases the signalbox is open; and your call will be answered as normal. In most cases Christmas day is a normal working day in Railway Ops roles.

On the Kent route the comment from James only applies to the power boxes / ROC's

When I've been late turn on Xmas Eve then we over hear all the smaller boxes, including panels like Tonbridge ringing in to give the time they have in effect given 7-5-5 for the holiday period

You have to get a red before you can get any other colour

Plenty of boxes close overnight, just at weekends or all week round, so the same question applies there too. I’ve a vague memory of some information being provided at crossings to show the normal box opening hours and to give instructions for what to do at times when the box is normally closed. I’m sure that I remember the MOMs going around the crossings on our patch just before Christmas to display a similar notice at each.

The only box that I worked where the phones were transferred elsewhere was one that could (and did) switch out, to the adjacent box.
