Was it possible when the terminal was working to have two trains on site at a time? Trains from the main line entered a single track headshunt then reversed direction to go under the loading hopper. There was RR loop to get the loco from one end to the other while the stock was on the hopper line. You can see the site on Google Maps here That shows the site after the demolition of the terminal. Google Earth lets you shift the timeline back and there are images of the operational terminal available. Looking at images of the site I can think of two ways it could possibly have worked but they both seem complicated. If the hopper line was long enough then two trains could have been put into the hopper line at the same time (but that would only work if the second train in was the first train out and due to depart in the same direction as it arrived (i.e. if a train came in from the Lanark Jn direction it would need to depart towards Carstairs or vice versa). Alternatively the second train could have been put into the RR line while the first train left the hopper line. The second train would then have needed to run back into the headshunt and forward to the hopper line. Did any of that happen or was it one-train-working? “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Last edited: 08/05/2020 at 10:52 by postal Reason: None given Log in to reply |
