I remember recently routing a train from York towards Leeds via the Fast Line instead of the Slow as per it's timetable. I didn't think that this route to Leeds was possible at the time and I got quite cross with myself but the train continued without stopping to query the route. I looked on Google maps and found that trains can be swopped between both routes further down the line towards Church Fenton. But would this kind of miss-routing annoy the signallers at Leeds? Probably depends on the signaller, but I doubt it would be an issue really. ARS on Leeds East would automatically cross it back to the correct line at Church Fenton. And the whole point of four tracks is to utilise them in the best way possible, even if that means using the "wrong" line occasionally.

Worst case scenario, shout over to him and tell him whats happening. If anything goes wrong the delay minutes are on you.

Now that I know that this can be done, I shall probably use the 'fast' for some 'slow' trains, but obviously would have to ensure that this didn't delay an express Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate.
