PAYPAL PAYMENT FAILURE - AGAIN! 24/12/2020 at 12:05 #135201

Geoff - I bought Warrington and Wigan today, attempted to pay over PayPal, and - again - payment failed. I was using Firefox 78.6.0 esr as my browser. Error message: paymentId cannot be null or empty Parameter name: paymentId

I'll go and checkout using another browser, which worked the previous time that I brought this to your notice, and, again, it worked in Opera.

No big deal, though it's apin to have to re-enter all the data afresh.

No idea about PayPal, but my version of Firefox is 84.0.1- perhaps yours needs an update?

Firefox ESR is a long term supported release, mostly used on business computers where stability is more important than having the latest features.

Is this a PayPal issue or a SimSig issue?

There are some comments on the web about this "not always working" and that running firefox in safe mode mode resolves it for most people and there was another comment about Paypal site and something to do with tracker blocking.

As I do not use it I have no idea if this resolves the issue but I suppose its worth a try.

Blessed are the true believers, for only they shall walk the Path, and they shall be welcomed unto the realm of the Ori and made as one with Them.

There appears to be an issue where firefox blocks paypal from working correctly (and a quick web search shows its a frequent thing)
The main reason appears to be that firefox blocks the content. Suggestion from web is to start firefox in safe mode. See here for further advice

Good Day!

"Safe mode" Firefox didn't help me.
Anoter browser ("Yandex"}- the same problem.

May be, incorrect data transfer between SimSig and PayPal
(PayPal automatically works with Russian regional settings).

My last payment to Simsig was in October 2020 (sucсessful).

With respect, Mikhail

In addition:

I resovled my problem with the help of a anonymizer -
start firefox, switch on anonymizer (with UK location), go to SimSig, then basket,
"pay PayPal" button, PayPal opens correctly.

Will this help to figure out where the problem is: SimSig data transfer or PayPal's incorrect data input?

With respect, Mikhail

For the record.

I bought Warrington and Wigan using Firefox 84.0.1.

No problems at all.

Also having trouble - on several browsers, PayPal is assuming I want to create an account, which is not the case. I want to check out and pay without any ongoing relationship with the payment broker.

Kind of amusing for PayPal to ask for my mobile number, only to tell me my phone number is incorrect.

Other than not using PayPal - and I don’t know either way if that’s on the cards or not - I’m not sure what if any influence SimSig has over PayPal wanting you to have an account?

Are you sure there's not a tiny link to pay without logging in? Yes, PP like to discourage it, but I can't find any evidence that you must have an account.

That page also shows/confirms the feature is only available in selected countries as explained by peter. If this is a merchant setting and Geoff has disabled it, why can some users still checkout as guests?

That was my thought too - no doubt Geoff will be able to confirm later.

I'm in Scotland, and my ISP tells the world I'm in the south of England.

No matter which browser I use (and I have three on my phone), or if I use mobile data instead of broadband, when the link from SimSig takes me to a PayPal """Express""" Checkout to pay, it asks me to log in to my account or create a new one.

oops did I press paste accidentally and drop this link into my post by mistake https://stripe.com/gb/pricing

oh, and pps: I bought a sim two weeks ago and the guest checkout did work then…

I believe I once read somewhere (though I can't see to find it anywhere with a quick google) that paypal only allows users (presumably identified by IP or something given they don't yet have accounts) to use the guest mode for a few times (about 10 (maybe per year or something like that)) before forcing them to get an account no matter what option the merchant sets.

Thankfully by the first time this seemed to trip me up while buying sim's I'd already been forced into getting a paypal account to transfer money to a friend so was resigned to having one anyway.

If the SimSig store has the PayPal Account Optional Service enabled then this extract from https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/UserAgreement/ua/PolicyPrivacyWax-outside may be relevant for UK customers:

"4. You will only be able to use PayPal via PayPal Account Optional for up to [10] transactions before we will require you to open a PayPal account with PPEL to enable further use of the PayPal system. At that point you will be required to enter into our standard user agreement to govern the ongoing relationship with PayPal."

"""ongoing relationship with PayPal""" pfah, I don't have an ongoing relationship with Tesco and I spend a lot more money with them.

I just tried again, on a third device this time, and was able to get to the guest checkout and am now the proud and exhausted owner of a licence for Marylebone

Firstly, some of the documents posters have linked to do not apply: PayPal offers several payment modes and not all options are available in all modes. I have confirmed that internally the RESTful API enables guest checkout, and verified again by going part way through a test purchase.

Secondly, when you buy stuff through PayPal (or Stripe, or any other online payment processor), they need to store certain information about your transaction per local laws, and for chargebacks, disputes, etc. Refusing to set up an account is basically saying "I know you have all my information, but I don't want to access it". One can assume the information is collated to create a profile for you, transaction by transaction, if enough information matches between transactions like CC number and your name.

Finally, in these cases, maybe either Postal/TempestMalice's comments on a 10 limit transaction was reached, or some fraud prevention kicked in. I have no control over that. The only thing restricted from my end is e-Check payments (a grand total of three transactions in 2019 IIRC) as they required separate actions on my end, and a frustrated user on the other end due to the time for them to clear.

I'm not defending PayPal, but it's not like other payment processors are perfect either.
