I recently read an article about plans to reopen several of the railway lines around Aberdeen that were closed in the Beeching era. Has anyone else heard this? Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate. Log in to reply |

There have been several rounds of applications for DfT funding to develop plans/business cases for re-opening closed lines, under the 'reversing Beeching' headline. The applications consist of the usual mix of obvious schemes that should have been done years ago to crazy plans to re-open railways in the middle of nowhere or which have been almost entirely built over the in intervening years. The real purpose, of course, is to provide the illusion of activity and fund consultants, rather than put shovels in the ground... "Don't stress/ relax/ let life roll off your backs./ Except for death and paying taxes/ everything in life.../ is only for now." The closest thing you'll get on the Aberdeen to inverness line that's new is the next station to be built at Inverness Airport. Kintore being the newest station to reopen recently with a "new" more consistent through service between Inverurie and Montrose. Elgin depot hasn't even came to anything.

A couple of the Holyrood election candidates have made supportive statement too. The rail services in the Glasgow area is far superior to the almost non existent service in the NE of Scotland. But this reflects upon the population of Scotland being mainly in the central belt. All this talk about building more track and restoring services is just electioneering and hot air. It will come to nothing. I think the economical arguments remain much the same as in Beeching's day. People will not use it even if it was there as it would be more expensive and there would be insufficient stations.
