Shunter releases taking too long throughout the sim. Causing delays which TOC and NWR will not be happy with in real life.

How far in advance are you requesting them, and which releases are affected?

Getting a slot at Lovers Walk has always taken ages, even going back to the old Brighton sim. I imagine it's quite a walk for the shunters to go to the panel and grant the slot, or whatever the process is. I find myself requesting the slot quite early, several minutes or more before the train is in position to enter the siding. Log in to reply |

I actually find shunters in Simsig far too quick to grant slots - when we first started using Ardwick you could be waiting 30 minutes on the Up East if you had the misfortune to be following a number of TPE units which all need fuelling before the arrival roads can be cleared. For Longsight you can often be waiting in a permissive queue at MP88 wheras in the sim you get the slot granted immediately by phone as soon as the previous move has dropped off the sim

Agreed, I would think a combination of delay and greater variability could be worth the alterations. Could even be tied to difficultly level Can a shunter reply with 'call back in 5' ? Not sure how much is in core capability and how much lies with individual sim authors to choose to implement what is there. Bill Log in to reply The following user said thank you: jc92 |

Can't speak for the pass side, but freight is run with the minumum number of staff required, in some case with a single person covering multiple sites as required. On top of that shunters panels/cabins aren't always right next to the Pointwork and represent a sizeable walk on a round trip, not to mention when they turn up and nothing is ready or something else is in the way. I'd actually like it if slot requests were granted in a much more randomised timescale than at present (memories of getting a slot in new bank on the old trent sim!) Rule of thumb, get a phone call in and get a slot requested as soon as you know you'll need it. "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Log in to reply |

I'm not sure how accurate to real life this is, but in most locations, requesting/getting granted an inbound slot early can block the shunter calls for any outbound trains. I guess that makes sense, since it's a conflict, but it creates a hard situation if the slot also takes long to request. Either the inbound or outbound ends up delayed. Maybe this would be solved relatively easily by having the phone call "register" the slot, and then the shunter grants it only when the last outbound has entered (or is delayed enough to make the inbound be earlier).
