Hya everyone just joined the SimSig world. I was a signalman for many years at several power boxes. Which sims are good for loco changes, units coupling/uncoupling. Are there any timetables from the loco hauled era. Just asking b4 a buy my first sim. Thanks. Log in to reply |

For shunting, loco moves, and a bunch of freight, Carlisle is the absolute winner in my opinion. There's a 1979/1980 timetable bundled with the sim by default and it's great fun to play.

Euston with the 1977 or any of the 1980's timetables will give you plenty of loco changes and shunt moves. One of my favourite sims in this regard.

If you're using the Available Simulations list (https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Wiki/Show?page=usertrack:areainfo) Euston is in the Intermediate list. As Phil says it is its own standalone sim that's recently been re-released on the Loader (you've joined at the right time for that one) and, like Carlisle, it is free.

I have Cowlairs / Central Scotland / Edinburgh / Motherwell timetables for 1984 with loco changes. As a starter sim you may be happier with Cowlairs (ie covers Glasgow Queen St) as quite a lot of attention is needed to the Stirling area AB that is not loco changing. Edinburgh with 1984 TT has some loco changing, but might be a bit too in at the deep end. While Motherwell with 1984 TT has sleepers and Carstairs portions to deal with, much is passing trains and yard freights so might not appeal as much. Carlisle is CERTAINLY in at the deep end ! Another to throw into the ring is Birmingham New Street. There is a 1991 timetable produced by 58050 which is exceptionally fun. While there aren't as many loco changes as earlier years, there is still plenty of overnight van shunts, portioned sleeper trains and loco swaps/run rounds to fit in between the normal train service. I would agree Carlisle 1979 is probably the top dog in terms of complicated station working and loco workings as well. "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Log in to reply |

I've played through the New Street '90 timetable a couple of times recently and it's an incredibly fun challenge to keep it all moving. You really have to stay on top of it all, plan three or four moves ahead. I rate it highly. My personal favourite is the old Euston '80s timetable, I'm not sure if that has been updated and bundled with the re-release but it was the pinnacle of station working for a long time in my opinion. But nothing beats Carlisle 79-80 for sheer madness. Last edited: 09/09/2022 at 06:58 by flabberdacks Reason: None given Log in to reply |

Whichever sim you choose you can rest assured of one thing. If you check the list of TTs bundled with the sim or available for the sim from the Downloads section and the TT writer is 58050 (our good friend Pascal) then it is guaranteed to meet your requirements. Not only do they include lots of shunts, loco changes etc. but they are as historically accurate as possible as Pascal manually creates the TTs from archive material in his possession including WTTs, Trip Notices, loco diagrams, CWNs, Station Working Books etc. etc. I helped him when the Carlise 1979-1980 TT was being created and there are no short-cuts allowed!

I have to agree. The really good thing about the Carlisle and Motherwell BR-era tinetables is their excellent use of rules. So if, for example, a needed pilot working isn't available because it's busy elsewhere that's reflected in the sim and you have to wait or make other arrangements. It's fascinating and challenging trying to run the passenger service when you've got parcels and Motorail vehicles clogging your platforms because of serious disruption hours earlier that you've yet to fully clear.

If you don't keep a careful track of what's in the all the sidings, especially the middle pair, you can get in real trouble.
