I'm playing the 15-10-09 timetable with ARS off and thoroughly enjoying it. I've had to slow it down to 0.8 x speed though, otherwise things get a bit hectic.

I've had to juggle things around a bit at Newcastle Station but I'm managing to get trains into a platform (albeit not the correct one), so that they can be routed onwards as per their tt.
However. For some reason, Heaton Depot have decided that they want to clog up a platform sent a train (5A00) towards Newcastle Station somewhat early; approximately 6.5 hours early!!
I have halted it on the up slow at Heaton South Jn. where other trains can get around it

Who on earth writes these timetables?

5A00 looks like a spare set held on P8 during the day, just in case another Pacer has broken down (heaven forfend). It then returns to Heaton TMD later in the day.

5A00 due to arrive at 1046½ into Newcastle and sits as a hot spare till just after 1700.

Misleading title. You're delaying its arrival into Newcastle per its schedule. I'm sure the driver would love to know you disagree with the planners and his/her instructions.

The implication being that the driver who brings it into the station has other duties to perform while the driver of a unit failing in service would pick up the hot spare and resume his duty. Be interesting to find the duty schedules and see which services will be held up for the want of a driver while 5A00 is not allowed to proceed.

I suspect that in reality it would be parked in one of the bays (my money being on P1) rather than blocking a through platform.

Like this one on a sunny morning in August 2016.

Common sense approach would be P1 as in the picture above, it wont harm much there as there wasn't any 5 cars that would require it like in today's timetable. However we quite often would leave a pacer in P8 for long periods. It could be worked around very easily by the signalers. Sprinters couldnt be left there (supposedly) as they only just fit, it did happen quite often though.

This makes sense and I will do just that as soon as P1 is vacated by its current occupier.

You see, I had a problem with putting 5A00 in P8 because I already have a train in that platform which was scheduled to sit in platform 7 for several hours and which would therefore have blocked both P7 and P8 and made life quite difficult, impossible even, given the volume of traffic in the other platforms.

Maybe it was an incorrect decision on my part, but I have now got to live with it.

It's called boxing yourself up. It happens and, yes, a bobby who does that has to live with it (and usually gets a 'Please Explain' for their troubles, but they don't make the same mistake again!)

Meanwhile, back in dinosaur land, if Finchley Road made a mistake at the wrong time he could completely wreck the peak at St Pancras. Pancras Regulator just had to trust the bobby there, it was too busy a box to be on the phone all the time giving lots of instructions. Amazingly, it worked.
