Getting into SimSig, trying out the Royston tutorial.

I've noticed some issues I can't wrap my head around.

(1) When joining on platform 1:

If I route the 2nd (from Cambridge) train through (i.e. not "stop here"), then the trains wait to join before the inbound train officially stops, which then marks it as "late".

If I route the 2nd train to "Stop Here", I cannot for the life of me figure out how to clear the "stop here" sign so the trains can then join. I can "Cancel" the route (which clears the white marker on the platform), but the trains still won't join. Telling them to shunt notes that they are "stopped at Stop Here" sign. Telling them to proceed through the red says that they are not stopped at red.

I supposed I could edit the timetable so the 2nd train reversed out of the platform and then re-entered, but that just strikes me as silly.


(2) The 6:20 freight train doesn't start reversing until the same time as the inbound passenger train expects to be able to pass through the track (at 6:38). I believe I'm not supposed to route it onto the Down Loop, and I can't find a way to tell it "track is clear, you can start moving now". So it sits in place for 3+ minutes and blocks the inbound train until it decides to start moving.

I'm supposed to follow the timetable, but the timetable is broken. Or is timetable hacking part of the sim?


(3) Am I supposed to be able to use a shunt signal to clear the freight train past K977 while the passenger train is waiting at platform 2? I got it working by explicitly allowing the driver to "check line and pass at red", but is that how it is supposed to work?

For 1a, I believe it's a known bug that joining trains report as late. In general, try not to pay too much attention to the points scoring. It's not always accurate, and a higher score is not necessarily representative of a better performance. For example, if connections are held for hourly trains at an important interchange, that's technically a delay, but it works out better for passengers.

That's not what the Stop Here signs are for. They were intended as virtual buffer stops splitting the platform into two separate pieces that were signalled separately - a bit like Ormskirk station. If you want to join trains, they have to be signalled on to each other in the usual way.

To quote the manual:


The signs are shown as black symbols on platform 1; when lit, the indication shows white. Next to them are exit arrows; a route can be set up to this arrow in the same way as up to the exit signal and either the main or subsidiary aspect will clear as appropriate. Trains will proceed up to the sign and stop there. The sign will go out when the rest of the route times out after the train has been in the platform for two minutes; a train can then be signalled in (either to the sign or up to the other train to join) from the other end.

Drivers are instructed not to pass the sign, even after it goes out, until the signal at the far end of the station clears.


This is why the train is refusing to move forward. There is no way to override this.

Not at a PC to try it, but I suspect not. Trains don't generally 'look through' a train in front to see a signal. The join should be carried out without using the 'stop here' boards.

It might do, but if it does then it's not behaving right and I may need to change the code.

For your 3rd question, could you route it towards platform 1? That, obviously, will depend on what else is going on. It's not my timetable so I can't comment further.
