NSW sims - switched out boxes 30/05/2023 at 14:01 #151981

Just a general question on this subject. When boxes like fassifern for example are left switched out, they still operate in automatic mode unlike what we would term switched out in the UK. Its all fine and well when everything is working, but what happens when something goes wrong?

For example if a track circuit fails, a signal goes out or a driver stops to report an obstruction etc?

Does responsibility and contact go to an adjacent manned box like Broadmeadow and are they allowed to talk drivers past signals?

I understand that in work hours for the local staff, they probably switch the box in and handle things, but if it's out of hours with noone about?

My other question is do the areas of these boxes form a sort of dark territory as well, ie the boxes either side have no indication of their area of control on their panel?

Cheers

It's not shown in sim, but when a box switches out, controlled signals display a subsidiary 'A' light - when this is displayed, the driver treats the signal as permissive. This is why the closing lever can't be operated unless all 'straight' routes are properly set for the main line.

Radio calls are picked up by either a nearby 24/7 signal box or can be answered by the Train Controller supervising the entire line from Sydney.

These areas were originally dark. However, signallers at the larger boxes have had 'dark territory monitors' for a long time now. The signaller at Broadmeadow can see what's happening all the way back to Warnervale.

That image, if you zoom in, also shows that Broadmeadow can only see what's happening on the main lines at Fassifern, no visibility of Newstan colliery loop. Fassifern is not staffed overnight unless a Newstan train is expected - they arrange locally for someone to be on duty at the expected time.
