I’m enjoying Central Coast immensely so far, having picked it up on the 12 days of Christmas sale. I’m into the afternoon peak on the 2011 timetable, with mostly good results so far. The Morisset K sets got me though. The N848 -> N841 double up in the up refuge with N850 -> N853 -> N840 -> N839 caused no end of confusion. I’ve gone back and run it through again from a prior save point and it worked, so the problem was me. That’s a pretty weird piece of working, even by railway standards. The first train comes from Newcastle, first stop Morisset (so probably empty), goes in the up refuge. The second train comes from Newcastle all stops, also goes in the refuge, and comes back out to go all stops back from whence it came. The first train then follows it back, presumably empty. It has to be genius, because it’s probably too late to drug test the timetable folks responsible. That was pre Sydney Trains, the responsible parties probably got redundancy and fled (more power to them). But wow! Newcastle had a better pass service than I’d have suspected. Weirder, but better. It might be a training run. I know they used to do ones from Sydney Terminal to Hawkesbury River with V sets years ago. Unfortunately I don't have a working timetable from that era I could look at to assist you.

Yeah, there's a 2-car K set which does a couple of runs between Newcastle and Morisset down and back empty both ways, Wednesday and Friday only on the SWTT document. Can only assume it was for driver training or some other route qualification purpose, but the SWTT doesn't specifically say. Very glad to hear you're enjoying it! Oh, OK, so it wasn’t every day. Won’t be driver route knowledge, through working should have covered the Morisset Up Refuge, and there would seem to be plenty of trips that terminate and shunt anyway. It could be guards practice drives. I’d have guessed that would operate on an STN, but maybe they saw fit to bake it into the SWTT? What did the empty K set do on the days when it didn’t go to Morisset? Log in to reply |

N817 all stations 0643 ex Gosford, arrives Newcastle 0811, shunts to 2 electric siding, Wed Fri only forms the empty runs to Morisset etc. Mon Tu Thu it just sits in the siding for a few hours instead of doing those extra runs. All 5 days it's back on the platform at Newcastle in time to form the 1527 to Morisset all stations (N864). It isn't even marked as a conditional path, I'm actually interested to know what it would have been for. Log in to reply |

In 2011, I was in Train Planning in Sydney, Australia, mainly producing STNs for Altered Working due to Track Possessions. Conditional Paths, usually for Freight or Track Machines, could be ignored when it came to Trackwork. All of the other Paths, Passenger or Freight, were regarded as Mandatory and they would have to run, unless you were advised otherwise in a Specification or Works Order. The Specification would state what could be altered, Passenger or Freight, and what would be Cancelled. As mentioned in the Posts above, the Paths for N848 and N841 were for Training, Guards or Drivers, out of the Newcastle Depot, probably to keep them familiar with that particular set-type. There were only 4 x 2car K sets allocated to Newcastle, and Crews may only see them once every 6 months, considering they would also be Crewing the V & H sets to Gosford and Sydney, and the Hunter Diesel Sets to Telarah, Dungog and Scone. They probably didn't need training 5 days a week, hence only Wednesdays and Fridays. Even then, they may not use the Paths provided, but by not making them Conditional, the path was guaranteed to be there, even if the time was altered due to Trackwork or other circumstances. The Morisset Services were to somewhat give the Sydney Services a quicker run between Morisset and Newcastle. Services from Sydney to Wyong and return were also to make the Sydney Services quicker between Sydney and Wyong. With only one Up and one Down track on the North, there's not a lot of opportunity for one train to overtake another. There has to be adequate Paths for Freight, Paid for by the Freight Company, and those Paths can't be delayed too much in either direction. Therefore, the Path for N848 and N841 Empty Training trips, maybe the only Path available. It's just a bit unfortunate that N850 on arrival at Morisset needs to shunt on top of N848, Empty Cars in the Up Refuge, to clear the Platform for the passage of the connecting Service N150 to Sydney. Also, it needs to be at Morisset as the connecting service (N839) after the passage of N139 to Newcastle. - Scott.
