I would like to put forward an idea to make the way SimSig handles signalling equipment failures a bit more realistic. The sequence of events happens as follows: 1. The equipment fails, as it does now. 2. After a certain length of time (determined by the slider on the options window), the signaller will recieve a call from "The Technician." This technician will then request that no train is signalled over the points or track circuit to allow the technician to fix the defect, or in the case of a signal lamp failure, that no train is signalled towards that signal. The technicians will take a certain amount of time to fix the fault as I will suggest below. The signaller will have to work trains around the technicians or stop the trains to allow work to be completed. 3. After the work is complete, the technician will call again and say "Work is completed and track circuit/signal/points at LOCATION are in order". Technician working times I suggest could be For a Signal Lamp - 1-3 minutes only Points - 5-10 minutes (during which point the points will flash out of correspondence, no matter if they are normal or reverse) Track Circuit - 5 - 15 minutes (perhaps determined by the length of the longest "subroute" in that track circuit) These times could perhaps also be adjustable by the user on the options window. sound`s like a much better way to do it. as for now i just ignore the phone calls and tell drivers to pass signals at danger for lamps out or track circit failers. i know that might be cheeting sorry but how many others do the same? yours paul Log in to reply |

Mikey this is an excellent idea. for a failure to be fixed, Single line/Wrong road working would have to come into effect so a technition is not ran over.

Alan, Single Line Working doesn't happen for signalling failures. SLW (with a pilotman) is for getting around lines that are closed for a long period like possessions, broken rails, failed or disabled trains. The sort of blockages take by technicians working to rectify faults don't warrant SLW or unsignalled wrong road working. The trains have to wait. However, if the line is bi-directional or reversible (e.g. on the Swindon-Didcot sim) you could use those or on a 4 track railway, one could divert the train from Fast to Slow Line. well all europen railway lines must be bi-directional by 2020 mikey. And as I stated last night SLW or WRW may not be an option in the UK but they are the most common ways of dealing with TCF's and signal failures over here. as a matter of fact WRW is acctually timetabled for some trains in Ireland.

TRESIM is for real and SIMSIG is a game. As a game you can do whatever the program writer has allowed. It should also be noted that signalers work to THREE rule books. Rule book two and three can catch out even real signalers. 1. The GENERAL rule book, "Up trains will only use the Up lines and Down trains will only use the Down lines", unless the line is bidirectionally signaled. 2. The LOCAL rule book, "Up trains are permitted to use the Down lines between .... when required for .... 3. The EMERGENCY WORKING rule book, basically whatever you can to get round the problem SAFELY. When playing SimSig, which one or combination of rule books you use is up to you. Dave M. Log in to reply |

Dave, Firstly, this is going off topic. The point of my post is the suggestion on how SimSig could simulate the repairs of signalling failures. Secondly, I am a signaller in a busy British Power Box, so I am aware of the rule books, sectional appendix and local instructions I am issued with or have access to and I definitely don't get the rule books you are talking and despite 20 years of railway service, I have never heard of your rule books and I will be dumb-founded if any other British signallers have too. Thirdly, I have used TRESIM as an assessor and have been assessed as a signaller too and I am aware of the capabilities of the software. I am aware that SimSig is a game, but as it strives to be realistic, my idea is offering an idea to help the game as it goes along.
