I thought AWS was invented in 1904(?) by GWR engineers. So what has this guy invented?

In 1904, the Great Way Round had already been beaten to the punch. Quoting from the ORR web-site:

"Train protection systems have been under development since the mid-1800s. The first widespread system was developed in 1894 on the North Eastern Railway."
