I was wondering if it would be possible to put an option to stop the stalks flashing when a route has been used and is "dead". The flashing stalks are actually quite a good idea, and i suspect come from the Australian practice, but on UK schemes, this doesn't happen (at least anywhere i worked or visited in the last 30 or 40 odd years).

It is a niggling little complaint, i know - but for someone who was a designer and tester for much of my professional life (i have now retired, thank God (no more politics)), i find them annoying as they aren't really authentic - even though they are quite a good idea and prevent you from forgetting to cancel a route.

Like i say, i am suggesting that this could be made to be an option, not to remove the function altogether.

The idea actually came from British E10k panels which flash the first route light for dead routes - though I'm told not all E10ks do it. Obviously the equivalent in IECC-like displays would be identical to the entry cursor and thus ambiuous, so that was a no go. Hence the solution for flashing the stem instead.

British IECCs/Westcads/MCSs don't really need this feature because, with individual signal/route exceptions, everything on a VDU has TORR as far as I know. Even if an old retained interlocking during a re-control didn't have it, the interfaces between the old interlockings and the new control system often layered it on.

Since SimSig simulates old panels without TORR, it was confusing when a signal had a route set but the signal wasn't showing proceed, even with a train sat at it. Thus the need to show *something* like many panels did when a route was used, and being faithful to IECCs, resulted in this compromise.

Ah, thanks for the background Geoff. I never worked on a 10k (being an old Southonian), so i haven't seen how the WR did things. Just about everywhere else, but not the WR.

I can definately see the compromise, and the reasons for it. I am still wondering though, is it possible to make it an option? No worries if it's too much hassle though. All the old NX panels i worked in or visited over the years without comprehensive approach locking just left the route set with lit button stalk....and it was up to the signaller to know if the route was dead or not. The flashing red signal was only initiated with a button pull and ALSR down (or equivalent relay for approach locking). Until the button is pulled, you don't know if the signal is ready to clear or a dead route! And, of course, there was no signal stalk indication to flash on a panel, that only came in with VDU's.

As for electronic control systems welded to old proper interlockings...i believe it was a group standard to add TORR IF said control system was VDU based, yes.

I'll consider it but to be honest, it wouldn't be that high a priority.
