The shop now has a "product" for you to pay in advance. Please do this before signing up to the meet in the Events section - if you don't, I'll have to remove your name. Due to the confusion last time and the fact that many people turned up unexpectedly we are now insisting on payment in advance which makes it fairer for everybody with enough food. Even those bringing friends will need each of those friends to have a username here (which is bound to be a good thing anyway!).

However, if you do not wish to eat, you can turn up after 2pm for no fee and no registration required.

Joe, no thanks, we should be covered. But a laptop and extension lead would be useful - see the sign-up sheet for details.

I'm with Adrian on this - does it mean we are barred from attending the Meet?

I have booked on the Events page and await with trepidation the removal of my name as I have not completed the PayPal information in the Shop.

When going to pay for the meet, the following text is dispayed...

Quote:
You can pay by debit card, credit card, or PayPal using this payment method.
After following the link to PayPal's website, find the following text:

Quote:
Don't have a PayPal account?
Use your credit card or bank account (where available). Continue
And from there you can pay by card without a paypal account.

just seen this on the wiki

For those who do not like using the online Shop or PayPal (or both), a cheque can be made for £9 per person addressed to SimSig Ltd and addressed to SimSig Ltd, 104 White Eagle Road, Swindon, SN25 1PS. The price reflects the increased cost for me to process a cheque compared to an online payment.

Please don't stir. As ProfJolly has noted, I had already provided an alternative in the Wiki, linked to from the Shop and the Event. As I know you, I'll leave your name while I await payment.

I got that far but I need some help after that. The impression I got from the Shop is that you can pay by debit or credit card rather than PayPal account but that the payment (and a whole slug of personal information) still goes through the PayPal system. That is my sticking point (or have I got it all wrong)? I also have it in the back of my mind that PayPal only allow a limited number of transactions by that route before insisting that you open an account. It rather restricts my use of E-bay, but I can live with that!

I don't really see what the issue is with not just using your Debit or Credit card with Paypal. A load of personal information is given out whenever you spend any where online so I don't see how it is any different.

it's a bit like that top-secret security code on the back of your card- read it out over the phone for a purchase and it's not that secret anymore!

Each to their own - I happen not to trust Paypal (and I am not given comfort by the 52,900,000 entries Google pulls up when I enter "Paypal problems").

That was exactly my experience. I now can't use outlets that accept payments via the PayPal system at all, because I refuse to open a PayPal account (I'm not satisified their security is adequate), and I've now used up my transaction limit for non-PayPal-account users on all of my cards.

So, thanks, Geoff, for providing a cheque option. Personally I have no objection at all to having to pay slightly more to use that method.

Trying to book a St Pancras to Nottingham but have the option of the 0915, which is suitable, or the 1015 which is not, I am on the 0713 to Paddington, due at 0844, but a 30 minute connection from Paddington to St Pancras is a bit tight, might not be worth a risk...

Would suggest using TfL's Journey Planner and see what that suggests. If sub-surface lines are down for engy works [again...] then I reckon Paddington-Oxford Circus-King's Cross St. Pancras (Bakerloo and Victoria lines respectively) takes about 20 minutes, but worth seeing what TfL say/suggest. Believe there is a direct bus available too but don't know how long that'll take. They do advise in advance of planned engy works but I'd take that with a pinch of salt as they tend to change it pretty much last minute.

edited to add 205 bus is the direct bus mentioned, according to this timetable there is an 0856 bus from Praed Street which arrives "King's Cross Station, Euston Road" at 0917. Whilst I trust that site somewhat, I wouldn't 100% rely on it, but you may find it is alright. Heck, you may find it easier and quicker to walk or even hire a "Boris Bike".

Hope this helps.

Thank you for that, I have thought of the 205 but I doubt it would be early to make a minus 2 connection knowing what Marylebone Road is like, and the Circle line is bound to be up for power upgrade or Farringdon works taking over still. Would say the 1015 but that arrives at Nottingham basically at 12pm and yet to trek over to Derby on a unit. Might just suffice going straight to Derby and then go via Nottingham on the way back, so then I can be at the meet at the start, mainly as I will have to leave early to race over to Nottingham to get a train back to St Pancras...was just hoping I could do it both ways

Assuming you are starting from Trowbridge then I would have gone via Bristol and Birmingham - which is in fact what National Rail comes up with. However, it looks like a Lichfield diversion which adds a bit of time to the journey. Or do you specifically want to do the MML?!

Thank you Geoff, I know it sounds an odd route but there is no advances fares for XC and there is the diversions too, granted it is a diversion I haven't done before, but there is a £7 Trowbridge to Paddington advance fare and a £11-£14 advance fare on EMT, but I like the change of scenery going via London and also the MML is host to the only remaining 'proper' HSTs, hence I am trying Nottingam both ways. Last time I did a Meridian service straight up to Derby and then go via Nottingham on the way back, so will probably do that again.

Thank you UKTM and Geoff for the help though

Oh also, I forget now, are donations of cash accepted at the meet?

I had a similar problem with XC (when I tried last month could book an advance single from Derby back to Alnmouth but nothing in the forward direction). Off Peak Return was showing as £54.10 after my wrinklies Railcard discount. I eventually got it down to £35 by booking matched pairs of advance singles between Alnmouth - Newcastle, Newcastle - York and York - Sheffield along with a Day Return from Sheffield to Derby.

It is now galling to see advance singles in both direction on the XC web-site which would allow me the round trip for £32.65

In response to Birchy, there is a whole lot of work going on under the radar at the moment. I'm sure that Geoff will be announcing what is going to happen at the meet as soon as he is happy that there is a suitable set of sims up to at least pre-release quality (i.e. sims that testers have already given a good workout at the beta stage).

If you're still going EMT to Nottingham - then change at EM Parkway for Derby, rather than going through to Nottingham - may be quicker (and possibly cheaper).

There wasn't an option on the booking for any other equipment.

I can bring along a four port gigabit switch if it's needed? Possibly some patch leads as well.
