Not quite sure why you call that close - would you call any pair of trains converging on adjacent lines "too close"?

"Too close" because it looks pretty spectacular. Having said that, I'm fairly sure if it was unsafe the interlocking would have been designed to deny one or other of those routes.

What's the problem? I've seen trains that close in King's Cross throat.

I think that's why it's "the six foot" and not "the five foot five". Also why in the days of drop lights there were big notices stating "DO NOT LEAN OUT OF THE WINDOW".

Thanks for sharing, Derbybest. It certainly scared the daylights out of me the first time I watched that. Glad I wasn't standing at the end of the platform in real life!

Very good! We have a few locations on the underground where such close shaves appear to happen - for those unfamiliar with the area anyway. One that springs to mind from my line is in the Aldgate area, where a Circle Line from Liverpool Street to Aldgate can be routed to cross directly in front of a waiting westbound Hammersmith & City line train waiting on the north curve (between Aldgate East and Liverpool Street). For a few seconds both trains face each other head-on with the Circle branching off just a few feet (or so it seems) away from making contact. In reality there is no way the 2 trains would ever make contact, but to the first-timer sat in the cab...

The above post from metcontrol reminds me, sometimes on the deep level Tubes, particularly the Northern Line, you'll be going along underground (perhaps just after leaving Camden Town whilst going Southbound) and suddenly almost like out of nowhere a train will appear next to yours, often also with people on-board. Sometimes a bit surreal to see, particularly as you're underground and then there is this sudden light source. Still does take me by surprise seeing it to this day.

Parallel S'bound departures from Finsbury Park can be a bit like that when the Picc and the Vic come close at the transfer points. Might be the same N'bund arrival but I rarely do that. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |
