It wouldn't be Gunnislake would it?
Lazzer,

No its not the Gunnislake Branch. The passenger and freight (if any) use the same staff.

I seem to remember that poor DB driver, route learning the branch when we did it?

I don't envy anyone having to learn the route, but at least freight drivers didn't have to sign the bit from Bere Alston to Gunnislake.

When I first learned it, it was a nasty rainy day, we were the first train over for three days, there were leaves all over the rails, and there are two open crossings you have to stop at. AND it's all on a massive hill. It took 25 minutes to get from Calstock to Gunnislake.

4. Which branch line had separate train staffs for passenger and goods trains that could be issued simultaneously?

Falmouth Branch?

5. Which station had a turntable installed after the line had closed and the tracks had been lifted?

St Hellier Snow Hill station. This station was converted into a Bus station and a turntable was built so buses didn't have to do a three point turn. Although it was demolished in the 1960's

Copping,

4. Sorry it isn't the Falmouth Branch. People seem to be focusing on the South West, think north of Bristol.

5. Correct, St Helier Snow Hill station on the Jersey Eastern Railway had a bus turntable installed when the disused station became a bus station. The site of the turntable is now buried beneath the disused station for the cable car up to Fort Regent.

Severn Beach then. There used to be goods sidings at Severn Beach. You used the past tense though - how long ago are we talking about? The only other GW branch north of Bristol I can think of is the line south of Yate but that probably hasn't seen passenger trains in decades (and wasn't it Midland?). Failing that, Wales somewhere.

I'm surprised that you are struggling with this one. The branch opened as double track, but was converted to two parallel single lines in the 1930's, one for passenger trains and one for goods trains to the nearby freight depot (each with its own wooden staff, hence two staffs in use simultaneously). The freight line closed in the 1960's but the passenger line is still open.

Do passenger trains still run over this line or do you mean the freight line was lifted and freight trains now run over what WAS the passenger line? Portbury Branch?!

dwelham313,

It's not the Portbury branch. The passenger line is still used by passenger trains. The freight line was lifted, there is no freight traffic on the line. By North of Bristol I the whole of the Ex GWR north of Bristol.

PrimeDetective, Steve,

Correct, its the Stourbridge Town Branch - all 3/4 miles of it. You can experience the ride here (in both directions).

Back in my BR days a question that caught out quite a number of people in railway quizzes at that time was 'What Southern Region station has 3rd rail DC units going through it, but none are booked to stop at it?' The answer probably won't apply today though.

I can think of two stations, Apress Works and Hoo Junction.

Sorry but it wasn't any of those. Furthermore IIRC Hoo Junction was a staff halt, whether it is still that today I have no idea. The station I'm referring to is an actual station where people can catch a passenger train from. What made it unusual was the fact that EMUs ran past the station, but none were booked to stop there. I'll give you a clue, the station isn't on the South Eastern or South Central divisions, but is on the South Western Division if that helps.

Was it Wimbledon Park?

If anyone can pose questions here, let's have another old favourite. If you board a train in the UK and do not alight or reverse, what is the maximum number of consecutive stations all beginning with the same letter at which you stop?

Hoo Junction is still a staff halt however nothing is now booked to stop there, certainly the ability to request the Gillingham (Kent) to Charing Cross services, these were the ones that were booked to stop for staff purposes, has now been withdrawn.

If you take the Piccadilly Line from Hounslow East through Hounslow Central, Hounslow West, Hatton Cross, Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3, to Heathrow Terminal 4 and continue through the loop back through Hatton Cross, Hounslow West, Hounslow Central, and Hounslow East, that's 10 H's.

Wimbledon Park is not the answer. The next clue is it is not a station in the London area of the former BR South Western Division.
