This photo was taken in November 1987 of the sdgs at Derby Etches Park. 97403 'Ixion' is coupled to one of the 'ETHEL' train heating locos converted from Cl.25 locos. This view has since changed compared to today.

In view of the recent release of Edge Hill sim I thought I'd upload some photos I took on 14th September, 1986 around this area.

These photos were taken around Allerton TMD. The last 2 photos are of 47107 which came onto the depot for fuel whilst we were walking about. The 2nd photo of this set shows two Cl.31s & a Cl.08, IIRC the Cl.31 next to the Cl.08 is 31418. I'd have to find my records of this day to asscertain some of the other numbers. The 3rd photo shows Speno URR 16P Rail Grinder, this was allocated to the London Midland Region & it's number is DX79500. It resembles a continental diesel shunter looking at it.

These photos were taken on the same day as the last set, but this time at Liverpool Lime Street.

The photo of 31437 IIRC was working a train to Hull on this particular day. Notice the train was formed of Mark 2a,b & c stock.

These photos were taken at Duke Street open crossing in the Birkenhead Docks.

03170 was parked next to the open crossing which when we drove down the road we didn't expect to see it parked there opposite a pub. The Cl.25 was on an engineers trip working.

I thought I'd save the best till last. This photo was taken whilst walking around the yard at Speke. It shows a Cl.45 to the left & a Cl.40. Four Cl.40 locos at this time had been re-numbered to Cl.97/4 for working works train for the civil Engineer. they were allocated to Crewe Diesel (CD). the 4 locos were:-
97405 (40060) CD
97406 (40135) CD
97407 (40012) CD 'AUREOL'
97408 (40118

Needless to say this Cl.40 was one of those, but as yet can't confirm which. These 2 engines were waiting to work Saturday night/Sunday morning ballast trains within the local area.

I was on the Branch Line Society's "Northern Powerhouse Tracker" tour last Sunday which visited, amongst other places, Holbeck Depot and Neville Hill. I've attached some photos, which may be of interest to anyone playing Leeds. I apologise for the low quality in places; they were all taken from inside a 142, and we weren't allowed to stand up whilst on Neville Hill.

The container crane at Leeds FLT, seen at the Leeds end of the yard. The tour was on the ARR/DEP line.

The small shed at Holbeck TMD, with a 142 just inside. The depot is used by Northern Rail, and also as a stabling point for on-track machines.

The gantry carrying signals L3864- L3858, looking towards Leeds/Whitehall Jn.

The disused Whitehall Road Engineer's Sidings (the sidings associated with signal 4420 in the simulation).

Holbeck Jn- L3607 and L3605 signals can be seen here, with the Bradford lines in the background. The train is stood on the Copley Hill Chord, reversing behind L3611.

The west end of Leeds station- L3631 can be seen on the far left, with the main gantry in the background (L3645 on Line A is obscured by an OHLE mast). The train is on Line E.

Neville Hill Depot, west end. The train has arrived via N18 signal, and is on DMU fuel shed road 2.

Quick break- the east end of Leeds station, taken from platform 11D. The gantry contains L3683 and L3681.

Another view of the west end of Neville Hill. The fan of tracks on the right converge to form the exit line of the depot, protected by L779. The train is in the process of crossing to Neville Hill Up Arrival 1 (the line protected by L784 in the simulation).

Moving towards the east end of Neville Hill, the two sheds here are the Electric servicing sheds. The line in the bottom-right corner is the Up Hull Goods Loop; it doesn't seem to see much use these days!

Two more shots of the depot, which hopefully give a good impression of its size- 15 lines converge to form the exit road. The brick building is the DMU fuel shed, which the tour passed through earlier. Neville Hill is used by Northern for servicing its 'East Side' DMU fleet, and the EMUs which work Doncaster and Aire Valley services. Virgin Trains East Coast stable HST and 91 sets on the depot, and it is also the home depot of the EMT HST fleet- several early morning/late night EMT services run to Leeds to allow the HSTs to return there for maintenance. While we were there, a rake of EMT HST trailers was taken onto one of the departure lines and split, possibly to release a vehicle for heavy maintenance. The signal at the right hand side of the first photo is L785.

Departing Leeds on Line D, the curvature of the lines in and out of Leeds station is demonstrated- the photo was taken around Leeds East Jn, with Whitehall Jn at the other end of the curve.

Looking in the other direction, the lines to Engine Shed Jn curve away to the left. The back of L3633 can be seen around the middle of the shot, and Banner Repeater L3858BR just under the bridge. The Whitehall Curve can just be seen on the right. Note that the overhead wires seen on these lines are just 'stubs'- they run out well before the signals at Engine Shed Jn.

Recently I got some photos back from the former editor of TRACTION magazine who had had them since 2002. As a result I've started scanning them so there's no risk of losing them again. These photos were taken between 1987 & 1988. During 1988 I started work in the Whitemoor TOPS office which allowed me to take several photos of trains that originated or terminated in the yard & also on March TMD which was situated next to the yard.
1. This photo was taken around 04.50am during the summer 1of 1988 shows 20030+20202 at the head of 6L87 05.06 SX SLK Mossend - Harwich Parkeston Quay. This was the only time I ever saw Cl.20s working from March to Harwich during my time at Whitemoor. Maybe the booked Cl.47 had failed & as a result these were substituted. As March men were the only ones who signed Cl.20s on the Anglia Region this meant that the locos would hve returned LD back to March. This was a usual trick loco controllers played so they wouldn't loose their locos to other areas & thus leaving themseleves short. This was something I ended up doing during my time as a power controller during the 1990s.
2. This interesting photo is of 56042 outside the TOPS office at Whitemoor yard. This loco was fitted with Cl.58 bogies & was the test bed for when the Cl.58s were being built. AFAIK this loco kept the Cl.58 bogie throughout its working life. Again picture ta\ken in summer of 1988.
3. This photo shows 20088+20187 outside Whitemoor TOPS office during the summer of 1988. 20088 was the only Cl.20 in the entire fleet to be painted in the 2 tone grey railfreight livery, but never had the sector marking applied to the body.

This photo I took of 47054 in Trainload Metals livery working a Trainload Construction service. This train was recessed on the departures overnight & only ran during the sugarbeet season with vacuum braked HTV wagons. This train ceased to run after 1989-1990 sugarbeet season. It ran as 8M06 0940 TFO COY King's Lynn - Derby St. Marys. The wagons would be loaded at Wirksworth Quarry with limestone. I've only ever seen one other photo of this train publish in a book before. This train only ran for 4-5 months each year & then it was only WTT'd to run on 2 days of the week & again if required.

Withdrawn from traffic & missing their side rods. These three Cl.03 shunters 03389+03189+03399 stands in Whitemoor Yard on 27-03-88 after being hauled from King's Lynn a few days before & now awaiting their final journey to the cutters torch. I actually took another photo of these locos arriving at Whitemoor Yard ealier the same week. Now dumped in a siding with other HTV wagons & a BG also withdrawn from traffic. I hope one of these locos got preserved as they are nice engines to drive & makes a change as they have gears. Without digging out some books in a cupboard I'm not too sure which one of these has been preserved. If someone out there knows maybe they could let me know.

Back in 1988 the entrance to March TMD was via Hundred Drove. If you drove your car or walked down that road this was the scene that would greet you when you reached the depot. The loco holding sdgs stopped, then a small grass verge & then the road. Unlike railway depots today there are no CCTV cameras or metal fences in the way. There aren't even any buffer stops either! how things have changed. This was the scene during the summer of 1988. The Cl.45s in the middle road are withdrawn locos(there was about 3 Cl.45s, one on top of the other). The other locos were all in traffic & each of the 5 roads could hold between 6-8 locos. But locos were stabled at other parts of March TMD as well as here. March TMD hosted quite an extensive varierty of loco classes over the years. Only a handful of diesel loco classes never went there.

I think they have to be downloaded. Being able to view them inline would be a lot better though, but I don't know if that's possible with the new website.

The Way it was done on old site, not possible (yet), it theroreticly could be done, but to do you would need to add attchments then submit posts, and once posted get the image links then go and edit the post inserting the links with the image bbcodes (ie: (img)link here(/img) substituting ( for [,)

or if using an external image host just insert using the image bbcodes
